I was fine till I did it, then during anal sex, I felt a sharp pain, and a week later constant severe pain in my lower left quatrant. I'm too nervous to ask the Dr. but could anal sex have caused it?

Anal sex would not have caused diverticulitis. If you do in fact have diverticulitis the problem is that you have an anatomic abnormality of the colon which causes little 'outpouchings' of part of the bowel. These pouches can become blocked by little things like popcorn kernels, peanuts etc. They then become inflamed and cause the pain. The treatment is with bowel rest and antibiotics. Sometimes the inflammation progresses and the pouch ruptures and an abcess forms. This can be treated either by an interventional radiologist...if it is small and easily tapped or more likely by a general or colorectal surgeon. Once you get past the inflammation and such and things are back to normal make sure you increase the amount of fiber in your diet. This helps to decrease the amount of pressure in the colon. Also stay away from seeds, popcorn, peanuts i.e. anything that could cause the obstruction of the diverticula from occuring again.

Diverticulitis is inflammation of a diverticulum, which can result in phlegmon of the bowel wall, peritonitis, perforation, fistula, or abscess. The primary symptom is abdominal pain. Diagnosis is by CT scan. Treatment is with antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, or a 3rd-generation cephalosporin plus metronidazole) and occasionally surgery.
Please see the web pages for more details on Diverticulitis.

Maybe. My friend almost died of Diverticulitis. She had to have an operation to fix it.
