A fever is your body's way of fighting infection. Infection is the key word here. If you have a fever, you might need an antibiotic to get rid of the infection. You should take Motrin and call the Dr. the Motrin will make you feel better, but it won't make the illness go away. Good luck.

Fever is caused by your own bodies reaction to a bacterial infection. It is due to a natural molecule called Interleukin-1, Interleukin-6, and TNF alpha. The hypothalamus recieves these mediators and increases the bodies "set point" to a higher level by increasing the production of Prostaglandins, thus causing a fever. It is natural and healthy to react to infection by having a fever b/c it helps provide a harsh environment for the bacteria to survive in. If you want to lower the temp, the best way would be taking Aspirin as it blocks COX, an enzyme that mediates the pathway to create prostaglandins. Thus, decreasing prostaglandins, the hypothalamus will go back to the "normal" set point.
PS. NEVER give Asprin to a child!!! It may have a severe fatal reaction called REYES syndrome. Please ...only adults .

It will be nearly unbearable, but wrap yourself up in blankets and sweat like the dickens. While you're doing this, take a few (no more than 4, please) shots of tequila or hard whiskey.
