In real life, I admit it to anyone who asks. I don't go around proclaiming it from the rooftops. Religion rarely comes up in conversation with the people I know.

I'd go a step beyond "admit", in the sense that I don't think it's something to reluctantly confess to, like a crime or a character flaw.
On the other hand I don't go around announcing it as a matter of routine. In many interactions and situations it simply isn't an issue of relevance.
But, in some settings, I wouldn't want anyone to be assuming my beliefs, or thinking I was trying to "hide" by being inconspicuous.

Good question. Given that atheists are the most distrusted part of the US population according to a recent poll, we pretty much are where gays were 50 years ago.
However, if we don't speak out and stay in our ivory towers the believers will continue to pass discriminating legislation and create hell on Earth for everyone, even themselves, though they know it not (nice biblical turn of phrase no?)
Say in now and say it loud, I'm a skeptic and i'm proud!
I admit publicly every day btw.

I didn't know what an atheist was in my adolescence, because I grew up in TinyChristiansOnlyTown USA. I thought something was wrong with *me*.
Now, I have no problem telling people what my beliefs -- or lack thereof -- are. I don't beat people over the head with it, but if I'm asked about it, I don't shy away from it, either.

Of course. Why not? I am and i do admit it if the question arises. Never had any problems. People should like you for the person you are, not for you're religious beliefs or lack of.

I am and I do admit it quite freely.
I think I'd have a harder time admitting to being of faith if I was of some faith because of all the stigma that brings.

Yes, I am. What's wrong with being an atheist? Should I be ashamed to have my own opinion and stand by it without a strong societal movement behind me?

I have no problem telling people that I am not a believer. We have less of a problem with religious insanity than the states does.
