If you do not activate it, you cannot make any charges on it. If you cancel the card before you activate the account, you should be okay with your credit score. It should not lower your score, it's not going to help it either though. If the card has been activated and you close it, you will hurt your score since your average account age (length of time the account was open) will be lowered.

Depending on where you live, credit cards often come NOT activated. You have to call to activate it. If you don't call, it is not activated. These cards usually come with a big sticker that says: Call to Activate.

If you do not want the card to be activated, call them. It should not affect your credit rating. However, if you make it a habit (e.g., ordering 25 cards then having each one de-activated), they may get annoyed and leave a note on your credit file.

PS: I agree with Ebenezer: if you do not want to use the card ever, then destroy it completely.

Activate the credit card but don't use it this gives you More credit when asking for a loan.. Meaning, say that credit card has a limit of 10,000 dollars, you haven't used any of it so there for when a creditor checks he will see you have 10,000 in unused credit, good for you.

you could still be charged an annual fee - call and cancel or activate it - your credit line is already on your bureau

You could always just destroy it (completely).

If you cancel it, your credit rating should not be affected at all. That only happens if you default on payments.
