The common name scallion is associated with various members of the genus Allium that lack a fully-developed bulb. They tend to be milder tasting than other onions and are typically used raw in salads in western cookery. Diced scallions are often used in soup, noodle, seafood, and sauce in eastern dishes. Scallions are also sometimes known as green onions in the United States.

Red, White, Yellow onions are mature BULBS of the genus Allium... On a scallion, the bulb never grows round or developes the "dry" papery skin.

Confusingly, the term "green onion" can also be used for immature specimens of the ordinary onion Allium cepa. In Great Britain and some Commonwealth countries they are called spring onions. In Wales, they may also be referred to as 'gibbons'. In parts of Australia they are known as either 'eschallots', 'shallots', or 'spring onions' depending on the region. In parts of Scotland, they may be referred to as 'Cibies'. However, in Ireland the term 'scallions' is used, while there is a variant in Jamaica that is spelled 'escallion', although the "e" at the beginning of the word is silent.

Red onions are reddish in colour, that's one difference. I'm pretty sure green onions are the little tiny ones that have the leaf part still attached, apparently you can eat that part too. I don't really know what scallions are, but a trip to the grocery store should clear it up for you. I think you are missing something: a sense of taste, onions taste very different from each other. Why not buy a whole bunch and taste them all and then you can answer your own question!!

The red onion is slightly sweeter, (has more carbos) and is good for use in sauces and stir fry. Green onions, and scallions, are a bit more acidic and have a different texture. My favorite scallion receipe is when used with a pasta clam sauce. The scallions balance out the fishy tast of the clams. Hope this helps.

Green onions are white and strong, red onions are red and sweeter and not as strong. Scallions are long green stalks with white bublous ends and are great in egg sarnies. You maybe missing alot, as there are a variety of things you can do with all three. Growing them is great, as you can pick them as an when you want.

A green onion is a long, 10-inch or so grass looking onion. It is green on the stem and white at the blub/root area. It is mostly eaten raw in a salad or on a veggie tray or to garnish asian dishes. A scallion the technical name for a green onion. A red onion is more purpleish in color and can be eaten raw or cooking... it is pretty pungent!

Scallions are green onions. They have a strong, sharp, distinctive taste. They're popular in SouthWestern and Mexican dishes. Red onions have a bit of a sweet taste and are popular on salads.

Red onions are really nice sliced thin in a tomato and cucumber salad. For me, they are the onion I prefer in green salads and pasta salads.

Big yellow Spanish onions are fabulous sliced in half and drizzle with balsamic vinegar & olive oil, wrapped in tin foil and bbq'd.

The plain yellow onions that you buy in bags are great for cooking in recipes with.

The white onion is also a nice salad onion or to be eaten in a veggie burger or on top of veggie dogs. It's slightly sweeter.

Long green onions I use in soups or eat just on their own!
