In ecclesiastical symbolism, St. Paul is shown holding a sword (1) because of his reference in Ephesians 6 of "the Sword of the Spirit - the Word of God, " and (2) because of his work in spreading the Gospel of the Word throughout the Roman world.

It was not Paul's sword. Paul never met Jesus Christ except in a vision. Catholic Christians would say, "Wow, that is interesting,." and then go on with our lives. With love in Christ.

You must be thinking of St.Michael. There is no reason why Paul would have a sword because he wasn't violent.
