Don't listen to the guys talking about the French being cowards. The French Foreign Legion has been around for freakin' forever and have been known to kick @$$. They still fight proxy wars all over africa and people are killed, yet you barely hear about it. In fact, the French Foreign Legion is ALMOST SEPERATE from the French Govt. military. The Foreign Legion almost conducted a coup and assassination attempt on De Gaul's life while her was in power. Thus, the Foreign Legion was placed on an island i believe for fear of inciting a coup, etc.

It is still known for its unofficial name change process in which recruits can change their names to aliases, etc in order to escape conviction abroad. Bad @$$ haha.

I think you gain French citizensip after your tour, too. Problem is though that the training is supposed to be even more brutal than most USA spec forces training with 2 guys dieing in training on average. They can legally beat you for insubordination, or whatever they deem you to be punishable for. So beware haha. Also, better to start learning your french now, they are leniant at first, but will soon start to become angry if you don't learn fast enough. haha

An aquaintance of mine was in the Legion about 20 yrs back. Said it was the best and worst times of his life, if that helps haha.

ALSO: the foreign legion IS NOT made up ONLY of foreigners. In fact its about 50/50 with 50% being French citizens. And why not recruit all the help you can get? Makes sense to me. Hell the Germans had it going for a while before WWI and now the Spanish have a copycat legion.

Toughest boot camp experience. If you could survive the rigors of the boot camp, then you will have to put up with some of the most dangerous world criminal fugitives. Rest assured, however, you won't be the only American in the Foreign Legion. There are Americans as well as many other nationalities. Right now, I think there are French Foreign Legions in Africa and the Middle East.

Yes, all can join The Legion, all foreign, If you're French, the Legion can obtain for you the nationality you prefer(perhaps you can also keep french nationality, but I'm not sure), but you must pass the selections,
I saw a reportage, and the training is very hard, not because a Sergent crying in hears, but physically harder compared to Full Metal Jacket.(almost the same exercises but in really extreme conditions)
In fact the training camps are placed in Djibouti and Guyana.
The first is placed in a desert area, very hot, during the reportage the temperature was near 50°C, and they marched and trained under the sun.
Guyana is a Jungle area in south-America, very wet and warm, the typical rain-forest, during the reportage a team in training had to walk a very long distance in jungle(fully equipped and armed) and detect a terrorist's camp, recon, attack and save hostages. and then walk back. One of the guys become sick for malaria, but he finished the mission.

If you wouldn't qualify for any of the western special
forces don't even consider it. It will be torture. They
might appear to take nearly everyone. But they don't
have low standards. The only difference is that they
force you into shape instead of running you through
a qualification program. They're one of the toughest
units around and the training is brutal.
