I came home from working the 3rd shift around 7:20 this morning and a couple hours later I noticed he must have gotten into chocolate around 7 am between when the last person in the house left for work and I got home. they were cocoa truffles... I brought him into the Vet within about 3-4 hours and she thinks he will be fine.. They hooked him up to IV, gave him charcoal and said he vomited a lot up...he's staying at least overnight and she's optimistic I can take him home tomorrow at noon.. Hes a 56 lb beagle with no past health issues

He also vomited within an hour of eating it on his own about 6-7 times...The vet said that was good...

After showing the vet the bag she said it was a serious dose but not lethal (she estimated around 50/70 mg)

Should I be worrying as much as I am? Any expertise out there?

You spoke to the expert and did exactly what you should have done.

He is where he should be tonight, at the vet's office. Vomiting after he ate was a good thing because it kept alot of it from getting into his system. The charcoal and the vomiting at the doctors office was also a good thing.

I'm sure if she believed he was in danger, she would have spoken to you about it.

You will worry because you love your animal. But your prompt response probably saved his life.

Just have faith that he's in capable hands, and call the first thing in the morning when they open up to get an update. Be sure to speak to either the vet tech or the doctor (I'm sure the doctor will want to be the one to speak to you). By this time tomorrow your baby will be home with you sleeping on his bed.

Hid the chocolates too.

Good luck, prayers to you both.

You did the right thing taking him to the vet - no question about that.

The fact that the vet forced your dog to vomit the majority of the chocolate up kept your dog from really ingesting the harmful ingredients which prove to be toxic in large doses. The IV was to replenish fluids and vitamins that may have been lost or compromised both by eating the chocolate and by vomiting fluids and solids.

I wouldn't worry now that he's at the vet - it sounds like you got him there quickly and the majority of the 'poison' was out of his system long before the harmful effects could be felt.

Good job! Holidays are tough with all the human treats that are so bad for our 4 legged friends. Thankfully no one in my family likes chocolate (yay) so we don't have any laying around.

Hang in there, you'll be alright.

Since your dog vomited and has been give charcoal and is at the vets that is the best place for him/her.
They will moniter the dog and it sounds like you did the right thing getting him in so fast. Getting what was left over out of the dog sn athen using the cahrcoal to absorb the rest is the best thing to have done.
If the vet thinks all looks good that is great.
Good luck.

Everything should be fine! If this ever happens again and the vet is closed or you can't make it right away, feed the pup a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide- this will make him throw up. Throwing up is how the pups body "rejects" the toxins. I had a friend who's palmeranian ate an entire box of chocolates around Valentine's day- the dog threw up a whole lot but ended up fine. If anything remains suspicious a couple of days afterwards, take him back to the vet for a follow up.

There is nothing wrong for you to be concerned about your pet. Its a good thing you acted so quickly, many people take chocolate poisoning lightly and run a super high risk of permanently damaging the pets kidneys and liver, ultimately effecting the pets overall quality of life.

That is good that your dog was able to vomit up the chocolate about an hour after ingestion, that means a good portion of the poisons hadn't had time to sink in completely.

Its nice to that you are such a vigilant and observant pet owner. Sounds like your dog is going to be alright.

Good call on taking him promptly to the vet! You might've saved his life.

It sounds like he's doing a really good job of cleaning the poison out of his system himself (Yes, poison, because that's what chocolate IS to dogs) and the charcoal will help with that. The IV keeps him from getting dehydrated.

Your dog will be fine, and hopefully will avoid chocolate from now on, but I'm sure you'll keep it out of his reach just in case!

It's good you took him to the vet. Most dogs at some point or another get into chocolate. They usually eat themselves sick or don't eat enough to be harmful.

I had a golden retriever who once ate a whole plate of brownies. He was fine.

Good for you for taking him to the vet!

The charcoal will absorb the toxins so the body cannot, so what he didn't swallow will pass without the body absorbing the harmful toxins in the chocolate.

Hope your baby feels better soon :)

Sounds like he'll be okay, but I understand your worry....our attachments to our pets can be so strong it's amazing. You don't say how old he is but if your vet has already given you an estimated discharge, I'd try and calm down, tho I'm sure you'll be jumpy till he comes home.

I had a mininture schnauzer that ate half a pan of brownies, she was super hyper, but was fine after a little bit of time. The fact that they got him to throw up is good, he should be just fine. You did the best thing for him!
