I rescued a dog from the side of the road today which could hardly stand up, its legs wanting to give out from under her. Didn't appear to have been hit, but was emaciated and seemed dehydrated. She was so weak I had to hold her so she would not spill out of the van's captain's chair. The Humane society didn't have room so I brought her home. Couldn't jump out so I carried her down to the ground where she managed to stand up. Drank so much water at dog bowl on the way in, then drank again at water bowl inside. When I was refilling that she had gone down the hall and was drinking out the half bathroom toilet again! Was disoriented and finally fell into a quilt I put on the floor. Slept for 3 hours so I was letting her get the rest. She didn't want food or didn't have the energy to eat, but also even after all the drinking the inside of her mouth was very dry. Found her with no collar, flea-ridden, face scratched like cats or dogs had gone at her. Vet is checking her now.

I hope it is just a stress reaction to such trauma, but excessive drinking could be a symptom of Cushings or diabetes.. I hope it is just the former, and that she was just totally stressed. I am sure the vet will figure it out..I'm sure her electrolytes were all out of whack.. I hope the vet gives you a discount for bringing in a poor stray..
God will surely bless you!

What a good samaritan you are. You were her angel. I think her poor little body was just weak from the lack of food and water. I am currently fostering a dog that was found SEVERELY emaciated with 9 puppies at her side. She had 3 kinds of worms and you could see EVERY bone in her body. The puppies were literally sucking all of the life out of her.
Glad to say though, a month and a half later, she is puppy and worm free, has regained back all of the weight she needed to and is a fabulous dog that will make somebody a great companion!
She was also just fixed on Wednesday so no more puppies for her!

She sounds really weak. Poor girl.
Dehydration and starvation can cause this. The vet may also find other problems and advise you on how to take care of her. Sometimes if they have not eaten in a long time, their stomach forgets how to handle food and they loose interest in it. The vet will probably have you start her on simple things like chicken broth and rice.
A warm bath in flea/tick shampoo will help her feel better too, and the scratches on her face can be doctored with warm water and soap. I hope she makes it!

She certainly sounds dehydrated. It's likely that she has some sort of parasite (worms, for example) as well, and the weather may be taking it's toll on her too if she's been without shelter as it sounds.
You really did the right thing. I hope the vet will be able to take care of her problems and she finds a good home!

Dehydration causes a lot of different health problems. She'll probably get IV Fluids, you may have to bring them home and give them to her too. If she's very ill, she may need to stay with the vet for a few days.
You're an angel...prayers to you. Keep us posted on her progress...

It sounds as though your little stray has been on the run for awhile. I am sure she is thankful you found her, thank you for being such a kind and caring individual. Your new friend sounds as though she could have a couple of things going on, but, it is best that you have taken her to the vet for a complete exam. Please keep us posted on her progress. And again, thank you for caring. God Bless you both.
