They start with a cell. That's just a positive connector and a negative connector separated by a material capable of holding an electric charge.

Several cells placed in series, positive to negative, produce a battery of cells:

Although it's definition is given as #4, it comes from definition #5a, a set of similar items.

A cell usually provides 1.5V so you would need 6 cells to produce a 9V battery.

Some cells (lithium button cells) produce 3V.

Rechargeable cells usually produce 1.2V
