I'm currently finishing my basement and I'd like to soundproof a few walls. Is there a certain material that I can place within the walls to do this?

Saw an interesting program on refurbing a rooftop apartment that was near the central air units for the entire building. My tip would be to use double sheet rock with a small air space between each layer. In other words, put up your first layer of "Rock" as normal except use thicker than normal, say 1/2" or 5/8". Then fir it up with firring strips and sheet rock again. It seems that the small air space helps to kill the sound that can be transmitted through the walls. Pay special attention to anything that can transmit vibration. Put rubber under sill plates, weather stripping and caulk and you will have a very quiet room. Good luck.

Cardboard egg cartons make good soundproofing on the outside of a wall; I guess it would work within the walls too. I'm sure there's soundproofing insulation you can buy at any home improvement store.

sound proofing batts are available from the same source that you buy fiberglass insulating batts from -- sound isolation can also be improved by offsetting wall studs -- so that there is no physical connection of wall surfaces between rooms. Metal channels are also available that reduce the physical conduction of sound though the framing members that support the walls. companies that supply conventional building insulation will generally be able to help you with sound insulation advice and materials that i have mentioned.
