I have noticed this happening quite often, it's quite annoying. I have Windows XP Pro SP2 and occasionally the Desktop icons will reload automatically. Usually when I minimize a window or something like that. It doesn't hurt anything, but it takes a little bit for the icons to reappear. Does anyone know what is causing this? Or is it a normal Windows operation?

This actually occuring because it is redrawing the screen. Windows XP might be using up enough memory on your computer, that it is not giving the icons the allocation of memory that might be needed in order for them to be sitting there. It happens on all windows versions. It is something that tends to happen with all computers, but you may be noticing it more here because of the time it is taking.

If it hasn't always been like that, you have too many processes running in the background of Windows, hogging up threads and memory..

I see the same on my computer. I think it is when there is a lot of paging activity going on.
