I have a taylormade driver that is R&A approved but illegal in the usa. A young golf assistant pro showed me that you can shave the face in the sweetspot to make it thinner and have a higher COR. I have one of the 8 degree Callaway 454 drivers. I had an xx shaft put in it at standard length. The young pro took fine metal grade sandpaper and sanded the sweet spot to the metal changed colors. This made the Callaway driver hotter than the illegal taylormade. I played 3 rounds of golf and hit practice balls two times. In the middle of the 3rd round the face of the callaway dented. I was carrying it about 330 yds. So has anyone else tried this.

And yes I know I have ruined it, it is dented. I will pull the shaft. I have 7 drivers and a persimmon wood that is still playable. So it was just an experiment. It was fun though. they sell the callaway new now for 99.00 buck at edwin watts or even less on ebay. and it was played with one summer. So it was not worth 50 to resell at present time. SO no big deal if it caved in.

I have a friend who's done it with his old Yonex driver. Same thing happened. Three rounds in, it dented and couldn't be (controllably) hit again. Makes sense to me!

Yes, I have shaved the face of an old Ping driver until you could see the weld marks. As you noticed it will make it hotter, but will also greatly decrease durrability.

No...waste of money and my time. Can you really feel good about winning a tournament if you know you cheated by shaving the driver? This is a gentleman's game...honesty to a fault. :)

No, it sounds pretty awesome though. I'd love to try it but I couldn't afford to break it and then get a new one.
