It may have been ordered without the mirror, you used to be able to do that. Usually rural mail carriers, or paper persons would order them so they could avoid hitting mail boxes. Even if your relative never used it for that, it could have been ordered to the origional dealership for that purpose. However since the 1986 Jeep Comanche came with a passenger mirror standard, I dont see any way you can beat the MVI on this one.

Look under the seat (Or pull it if you have too) you should find a piece of paper under the seat that will show all the options that the jeep came with from the factory. The other way to find out is to contact the jeep dealership and see if they have an options look up for that model and see if the passenger side mirror was and option. I remember my 72 Buick Le Saber never having a passenger side mirror on it. Every time I took it to have safety done on it they would pull the same crap on me. I would simply ask them to PROVE to me that the car had one to start with (there should be some holes or a way to mount it if it was installed at one time) they could never prove it and had to pass me. I could prove that the car had passenger side mirrors as an option because of the paper under the rear seat. I would laugh every time they watched me pull this paper out from under the rear seat and show it too them. So there are some ideas. Hope they help. And Happy Revving.

plenty undesirable advice (and a few good right here) rules contained in the united kingdom substitute all the time...on condition that 1978 it incredibly is a criminal requirement to have 2 rear viewing mirrors of which one among them must be an offside mirror utilising a common automobile as an occasion..... if the passenger door mirror is knocked off then as long as you have the indoors mirror, then you definately are ok. no longer some time past i replaced into pulled and booked for my automobile being packed in a fashion that obstructed my inner rear view mirror. I have been given off because of the fact the police did no longer comprehend that have a door mirror on the two part meant i did no longer opt for the indoors mirror I tremendously plenty purely use my door mirrors (from a life-time habit of utilising automobiles) yet I continuously ascertain I even have 3 mirrors geared up as whilst replaced into made

It will most likely take more effort and time to track down that info. then to just buy a new mirror.
But if you really want to...your jeep as a vehicle identification number. You should be able to contact the manufacturer and request a copy of the original detailed invoice.
Depending on the area you are in, the standard options on the vehicle may have changed or been upgraded in the last 20 years.
Is it truly worth the fights and headache?

the dealer should be able to run the serial number and tell you if it came that way,if it did then it is legal as the requirement is to comform to the safety specs at time of manufacture.
could you imagine every one in the country having to up date everything every year that a change is made
my 1967 tbird has no shoulder belt or passenger side mirror and they cant make me put them in as the car did not have one from factory

Your best bet would be to check with your insurance company. They have a database which shows practically every detail of your car since it was first registered. They have to know every apspect of your vehicle for safety reasons. Since this is a mirror you are talking about, it would fall under a safety device on your car hence they would know if it came equipped with dual side view mirrors or not.

You would have to put in alot of footwork to find out that info. I would just install one and keep it moving. or would adding the mirror affect the overall appearance you desire? Then put it on for the inspection then take it off until next inspection.

Rather than fight the issue, just go buy one and install it! If the MVI requires one, get one.
