Given proper care, nutrition, and regular veterinary visits, a cat kept indoors can live as long as 21 years or more. (The average age of cats is 12-15 years) This is, of course, barring any serious medical conditions.Cats that are indoors-outdoors usually don't last to the the average age because of traffic accidents, fighting with other cats, intentional acts of violence, poisoning (accidental or intentional), diseases caught from other cats, being picked up by animal control and subsequently euthanized if not claimed, and death caused by predators."Stray cats" AKA "feral cats" usually don't live more than a couple of years because of starvation or all of the above

Well, my oldest cat is 19, and my second oldest cat is 16 (and they're both alive). My friend's cat died when it was about 17. So I'm guessing they live to.. about 17-20 years.

Oh, by the way, it can depend on indoor or outdoor cats (mine are indoor). They won't live as long if they're outdoor cats, for they could be run over by a car, or get a disease, or get shot by those jerks out there that should burn a painful death.. you know.

On average 15 to 17 years, if they are exclusively indoor cats, but some live to be early 20's. Outdoor cats have a much shorter livespan- 4 years I think is the average for an outdoor cat.

Cats can live anywhere between 13 and 20 years. Indoor cats generally live longer, as they are in a protected environment and not exposed to the elements, traffic, other animals, poisoned food, etc. Be sure to give your cat a good, well-balanced diet made especially for his or her stage in life. Give her plenty of fresh water. Be sure she has a clean litter box, lots of toys and plenty of love and attention. With good care, your kitty can grow up or grow old with you.

I have had three cats so far. Two of them lived to be over 20 with me.
The third is still going strong.
It is said that well kept cats grow older. Certainly true.
But consider the other side:
People who treat a cat well also tend to live longer!!!
There is a Chinese saying: If you stroke a cat every day, you live longer!!!
I believe it is true.

Well I just got back from the vet where I had to put to sleep my sweet kitty Oscar, who would have been 16 next March due to kidney failure. So, the vet told me that between 12 - 15 years is average for a kitty in relatively good health and like most others have said, that they remain indoors. Although my kitties have always been allowed outdoors -- Oscar was 15 and I have another that's 13 and although she is morbidly obese and snoars heavily, she'll probably make it at least that long. :)

For the record, my cat's at least 15 (not sure about his very early kittenhood but I can track him back to being fully grown 14 years ago) and still going strong! He's lost some of his grace and speed, but is otherwise the same as he was five years ago.

For the record, he was indoor/outdoor until four years ago, when he started losing fights so we brought him fully indoors.

Hurray for longlived kitties ;)
