Scientists actually track the numbered bands by capturing geese when the land in places along their migratory routes. They use that information to find out migratory patterns. Some information they learn by watching the patterns is how changing climate effects where the birds live and where they go in their migration, what effect food sources have on the same things and how their general population grows or diminishes.

When you hunt if you get a banded bird you need to call it in.When they band them they track a number and where the goose was from. It is tracked as to where is was hunted and killed and it tracks the migratory patterns.
