Adult male cat was recently neutered (2 days) & ripped out a couple nails- vet said he was aggitated & scared.
First, will they grow back? Also, if the animal is hallucinating from extra anasthesia, will this wear off soon? Is everything safe & will it wear off soon? How do I check for urinary infection? I'd rather be safe, so I'm considering another vet at least for now. Please help!

How did your cat rip his nails out? If he was that aggitated, they could have gassed him before giving him anesthesia...

The nails should grow back. After two days, the anesthesia should be pretty much out of his body. As with humans, the affects of anesthesia are different with every animal, but usually it's pretty well out of their system 24 hours later. If your pet was that bad from the anesthesia, they should have never released him.

A urinary tract infection is done by a urinalysis. What makes you believe he has a UTI?

If you're worried, call the doctor that did the surgery now before they close. If you're not comfortable with your vet, by all means, find another one.

It sounds like your cat may have had a bad reaction to the anesthesia. I would try to keep him quiet and warm and watch him to see if he doesn't eat or drink enough. If he won't eat and doesn't drink enough, definitely take him to a vet. I would also think about taking him to a different vet if you feel you cannot trust the other vet. I've been very lucky to find a great vet for my cats.
As for his claws, they probably will grow back. They are just like toenails and fingernails and unless the nail bed is completely cut out, they grow back. The meds should have worn off by now, but he may be in pain from the surgery and nail loss.
When a cat has a urinary infection, they strain and sometimes cry while trying to pee, or even go outside the litter box. I've had many male cats neutered and they have all been OK, but it never hurts to just watch when he goes to the litter box to make sure he's alright.

First if you wanted to be safe you would have taken it back to the vet for a followup. The vets don't usually discharge them until the anesthesia wears off after a couple hours. You cat is having a reaction to something else. You can't check for infection w/o a microscope or lab results. And how old is the cat? Maybe as an adult he is not happy about being neutered. And I can't say if his claws will grow back, they would have to be ripped right off totally like a declaw or possibly they are just broke real short. How bad did they bleed? And how long did it take to stop. Seriously take him back to the vet. Not Yahoo! answers.

I work in a spay/neuter clinic and we deal with about 60 cats a week, and I can tell you they rip their nails ALL THE TIME. They grow back with NO problem at all. Sometimes while they are in a cage or carrier, they try and dig at the bars or the door of the carrier and can do rip claws quite well.
What is the deal with needing to check for a UTI?????
