It was originally an expression that meant "I was just kidding".(Through the years it has fallen to various interpretations*) It was Paul's way of identifying that he had just expressed a satirical remark. It has come to be interpreted that since God is all powerful, and all knowing he would forbid anyone from using the subject logic (of that particular satire). When Paul indicated that a Christian should not be in the Military, or that If you are in the military and you become a Christian, you should resign. I believe that was one of the verses that Paul ended by saying "God Forbid"
Ironcally, The Jehovah Witness didn't know that Paul was just kidding or making a satirical remark. Consequently, they will not Join the military or salute the American Flag. That's right, they missed Paul's Joke.
It's like if someone quoted the Bible verse, "Lean not on your own understanding". And you remarked, "Ok, I will stop thinking, and just base all my decisions on how my preacher understands how I should act. God Forbid!
*moderation originally meant kindness. Now the Mennonites main theme is moderation in all things; and they interpret it to mean - don't get excited over anything. See how they twisted the original meaning by applying modern definitions to ancient writings.
See how "watava" used a modern dictionary to define an ancient idiomatic expression.

it means "God forbid" lol. like forbid meaning "not to allow something to happen". It is usually used sarcastically but can be used seriously. Usually if someone makes a big deal of out something and you want to make fun of them you say "god forbid". Man: Why are you always talking???!? woman: well god forbid someone bother you while you're watching tv... ....terrible example. It's hard to come up with an example. lol. but yes it's used *somewhat* in dailt convos

When an outcome would be horrible, religious Jews and Christians often say "God forbid..." asking God to decree that this horrible thing cannot happen. It is a superstition, sort of to ward off a curse, or bad luck, or evil.

I have always heard that saying as 'God forfend!'
Which means the very same thing. To prohibit, to disallow, to ban etc.
Example- God forbid you should stare at that computer screen!
Translation- God, avert his eyes from the computer!
Very dramatic!
