I am moving to a new apartment in January. How can I make the most of the small space. What color is good for a small space?

Instead of using night tables, use pedestals--just big enough for a lamp and clock/telephone. if possible find corner units--they save a lot of space--cornerdesk, corner armoire, corner shelves, etc. get some of those under-bed drawer units--they are like giant tupperware containers that have wheels on them enabling you to roll in and out like a drawer. dont use a dresser--use tall narrow chests instead. if you need a mirror hang one on the wall and a full-length one on the back of the door. Put robe-hooks on the inside of your closet door. if you have a desk--make sure youve got a chair that can be pushed all the way under it when not in use. a long shelf can be put up on the wall and you can place wicker baskets on it to serve as additional drawers for clothing storage. if there doesnt seem to be room for your closet door to swing open, you might consider removing it and getting an accordian door or a bead door instead. a color tip: if your furniture is a similar color as your walls it will give the illusion of a larger space. a dark color will not make the room smaller, but may give you a feeling of being "boxed-in" after a while.

Contrary to what "Wise Guy" answered, color does matter. Light colors are always best in a small space. Dark colors are just too overbearing.

Our bedrooms in our house are only 8 1/2 feet by 11 feet, so they are very small. We only have one nightstand in each room and use small dressers and chests of drawers. There are some very good choices out.

The first thing I would do is pick your bed and then measure how much room you have after that and then take the measurments with you to pick out the rest of the furniture.

You might want to consider under bed storage and/or putting up some shelves for additional options. Lower level shelves can be used instead of bedside tables to save space and look modern.

Get bedroom furniture that is light not dark wood. The darker you go the smaller the room looks. Also if you put mirrors in the bedroom on the wall that will make it look bigger. I would go with a neutral color. My room is very small so I had it painted white and then I got very light furniture and it made the room look bigger. A beige would be good or a tan. Go to a paint store as they have many samples of swatches you can take and try to see if you like it.

I say go Japanese! Get a futon which doubles as a bed, couch and what have not. Additionally, there is compact furniture for storage, and entertaining. Make sure the walls are painted white and let the furniture be colorful with some small, but modest paintings and pictures. It will make your space appear larger than it is. Good luck.

I agree with the light colored furniture and decor. While my husband is finishing school we've been living in small apartments, and here's what we've done:

For the bedroom, use a vertical dresser rather than horizontal because it'll save you floor space. Use under-the-bed storage tubs for holding things out of sight (I use these for my art supplies and scrapbooking). You can also use vertical bookshelves to hold misc items.

The biggest advice I have is to get rid of the clutter you don't need and don't use. That alone will create space! Good luck in your new place!

Consider getting a loft bed for your bedroom. It's like a double size bunk-bed without the lower bunk. That'll give you room for a dresser, desk, chair or whatever because the bed itself isn't taking up much floorspace at all. If that doesn't work, try a daybed or futon sofa-bed. The other answers about light colors on the walls and light color furniture are all good as well.

I'd suggest a highboy which is a chest of drawers that are tall and narrow. Also, mounting high shelves on the wall will give you space. Remember to think "up" instead of "across" the floor of the bedroom. Also, corner curios are a great use of typically wasted space. Hope this helps.

For colors, the lighter the better. Make sure your walls are white or near white to make the room seem bigger. Dark colors make space seem smaller.

Painted the walls in linked rooms the same light mushroom color, to unify the living and dining spaces and make the rooms look much larger.

So the furniture wouldn't look dwarfed by the high ceilings, she re-upholstered it in an open, light pattern.

Literally made the sofas taller by cutting 4x4s and placing the pieces under the sofa legs to raise them a good five inches.

Balanced the 18-foot wall in the dining room with a seven-foot tall glass cabinet, with glass shelves and mirrors that give an extra dimension to the room--and more storage space.

You should use a lighter colored wood, like maybe a light oak or maple. Darker wood will only make your furniture pieces stand out more, making your room look more crowded. Don't overcrowd your walls with paintings and things, and this will also help your space seem larger.

In general, any light color or pastel will 'open up' small spaces; also mirrors...for the furniture, look for smaller pieces that don't clutter up the room and take up more space; remember PROPORTION; aim for pieces that are 'light' looking; lighter woods, etc....for example, a coffee table (if you have room for one) could have a glass top; glass opening up the area and not cluttering it up....look for 'skinny' legs on tables, chairs, etc., again, to open up your space; when you look for furniture in stores or in a catalog, look at things that are smaller, lighter in color and that would give the appearance of lots of space when grouped together!!....take your time and dont rush into buying anything....email me if you have any further questions I'd like to help further if you want me to.....good luck.............
