Rev. Phelps, Westboro Church, the Crusades, Jerry Falwell, Whatever, we seem to be stigmatized alot by past Christian behavior, and current outspoken fundies. Its on the board alot, about how we force beliefs, hate homosexuals, etc. Do you ever wish you could find another term, and start over the way Christ really intended it? I love the message of love and tolerance Christ left us, and so many Christians have stepped on it. I WANT to follow Christ, but sometimes I wish there was away to lose the stigma. Atheists always say how funny original sin sounds, making a person pay for the sins of his family before him, and yet they make us pay for the sins of people in our religion. If you could change the name "Christian", what would you change it too?

I would never change it, yes it does have a bad air hanging around it but we are called Christians because we follow Christ, if you changed the name then what would it imply? I will always be a Christian. The name Christan is to imply you follow Christ so i will stick with Christian.

But hey still a good question, thumbs up for every body!!!!

Well it is unfortunate that Rev (so called) Phelps, Westboro, and the crusades are associated with Christianity. Actually none of them really are. Phelps and his church are apostate legalist, the crusades were catholic, but Jerry Falwell is a decent human who has devoted his life to helping other people. Research Falwell's life and works, then tell me if he has anything to be ashamed of. Where can a single girl who is pregnant go and have her food, housing, medical care and job training "paid" for-just for not getting an abortion. Most people just want to preach that abortion is wrong- Falwell will give you a place to go and live for free if you promise not to abort-they even pay for the doctors and hospital bill 100%. If you don't want the baby-they will adopt it out.
I think you just hate religious people-you are not interested in finding out who is real and who just talks.

We are followers of Christ. Christian fits. And anyway, there is no point in changing. Many people claim to be Christian even though they live very un-Christian lives. If the name were changed, those same people would just claim the new name. All we can do is live our own lives as true to Christ as we possibly can and be proud of the only name he has given us. It is, after all, at his name and no other name that all knees must bend.

I'm glad you posted that. I'm a Humanist, and I agree that it's unfair to hold Christians of today responsible for the crimes of Christians of yesteryear, just as it is wrong to hold all Jews guilty for what a handful of Jews who happened to be in Jerusalem and happened to be in attendance at Pilate's court when Jesus was sentenced to death chose to do (according to the Gospels, anyway). The important thing is that modern Christians repudiate the crimes, ignorance, and bigotry of past Christians and show that they have embraced a better way. Unfortunately, there are still some Christians who would burn people at the stake for not believing as they do. There are some who would force everyone to pay lip service to their religion against their conscience. Those Christians bring shame upon themselves and the name of Christian.

But don't abandon the name. Redeem it by being the best kind of Christian you can be and reclaiming the name for the majority.

I am proud to be a Christian, I stand alone on the word of God NOT man or Man-made doctrines.

The word of God answers all questions that face us today.

I really like your question. I don't think changing the name would make a difference. We Christians need to realize that even thought Christ forgives our sins when we truly ask for it, the world doesn't. If we wish to be a witness to the world we need to think before we do anything. How will my actions effect not only my relationship with Our Lord but Our Lord's relationship with the world.

I wouldn't change it, it would be too hard to call me a Jesusian...Hey don't worry about what the world thinks...the world does not know Christ and it is Impossible for them to see unless they are repented...and that goes for us too! "Blessed is the man with a pure heart for he will see God." Just look to Jesus! "All who call on the name of the Lord Shall be saved" book of Joel. I think early Christians were called the people of "The Way" and they were usually massacred by the world.
Pray for everyone that they may be able receive Christ.

Changing the name wouldn't resolve anything. The people would still be worshipping Christ. For that reason, it's an obviously very fitting name. Why do you care about what other people think of your religion so much that you wish the name could be changed? Just don't care what other people think because, no matter what... Groups of people aren't going to agree.

I wouldn't change the word at all. I think for believers in Christ, Christian is a perfect term. I am pretty sure there are millions of Muslims who wish the stupid terrorists didn't give Islam a bad name either-but their not going to stop being Muslims, are they?

I agree about the bad stigma we have but I would not change the name at all. We are named after Christ. The Bible says we are called by His name. What a great honor.
