I was at my son's school watching a presentation about animals by some man. Anyhow he was showing frogs, lizards and i didn't think anything bad about that until he pulled out a boa constricter and some other snake that i cannot recall what the name of it was. Anyhow i got to thinking that might make a kid think it is alright to pick up snakes. Even though i have told my son to not pick one up, to just run if he sees one but this being showed in school do you think that my child and other kids will be thinking it is okay to pick up a snake?

We live in the appalachian mountains and it is very common to see copperheads and rattlesnakes so do you think the school should even be doing this?
Also that man wrapped that snake around him asking the kids did they want to touch it. (my son didn't)

If the man educated the kids properly then they should still know that snakes can be very dangerous and not to touch one. Otherwise yes children may think that it is okay to handle snakes.

That kinda presentation is normal and my daughter has been to many. The difference is the presenter made the kids aware that they should never approach a wild animal no matter what kind it is. I too live an area where it is common to see poisonous snakes and I have never had a problem with her thinking it was ok to pick one up. The fact that he didnt touch it is a good sign. If he wont touch a snake that someone else is holding the chance of him picking up another snake is slim to none.

Did you see the whole presentation? Because my daughter's pre-school had a man come in to do this and after his presentation he told the children how he was a trained professional and that the snakes are tame because they are his pets and that if they ever saw a snake the best thing to do was to run away from it and tell an adult...

not if the teacher told them the dangers of snakes. we used to go to this hands on science museum and there was a man there who sowed snakes but before he would ever pick on up he would tell us not to do i if we saw a snake in the wild. if the kids are educated right it will not make them play with snakes.

I dont know why so many parents are so stupid and want to sheild their kids from every thing. being taught about nature and snakes, going to see art in a museum (where a lot of paintings are nude). honestly kids need these kinds of things to learn and grow.

That happened once when i was in skool and i didnt think to pick up snakes or any thing. You should tell your son to be careful around snakes and not to touch them because they could be poisonous

If you are concerned, you need to talk to your son and make sure that he realizes that the animals in the presentation at school are not like the ones outside and that the man was specially trained to handle them and just how dangerous they are.

I personally think that kids should be taught about all animals but I think that whoever is teaching them should also teach them about the dangers of wild animals as well.
