You get a good view from the top of the double decker bus - but this is winter - it is unseasonably warm now, but the weather is going to change very soon. If you sit inside on the lower level, you view is no better than from a window seat on a city bus.

The Red bus is $40 a day - you can take unlimited public transportation for $7 a day - the subways run at least every ten minutes and the buses run very frequently. The Gray Line bus stops get very crowded and often you can't get on the one that pulls up - also, the stops sometimes are out of the way from where you want to go.

Some of the tour guides are wonderful - they are so knowledgeable about the history of this great city and they love living and working here. And, some of the guides are really boring and can't wait for their tour to end.

If you want to see the Statue of Liberty, the best way is to take a ferry ride - the ferry is free. It will take about an hour to go to Staten Island and return to downtown Manhattan - that's more than an hour that you're not using the tour bus.

Have a great time. If you need help planning your itinerary and using public transportation, post another question here.

Any sightseeing tour is always good for those first in a city.
The quality depends not so much on the type of vehicle, much more on the knowledge and motivation of the guides.
What you've found interesting during the tour, there you will later go back. Good guides should talk of many such interesting places and also mention how or when they can be visited. A tourist office can tell you which tour will meet this best.

It depends... it's a good tour, but a very fast one... you don't get to stop anywhere, it's just "watch as you pass"...

I Liked it, because I got to see a lot of places, and then I returned to the ones I was really interested in...
