Catholic Question?
Why do you call your priest father, when the Bible tells you not to?
Call no man Father apoun the earth, for such is your Father in Heaven. Please do not tell me that your priest is your spiritual father on earth. Context dictates that very thing. Call no-man (spiritaul) father on earth. God does not expect you to call your priest father in the secular since right? So if you do then it could only be in the spirit form. Just wondering

I am not sure why they call priests father. I was Catholic but I left the catholic church in the christian faith we say Pastor, Deacon, Elder.

But you are right God is our father not the priests and thank you for posting.

I can only answer for myself, not sure if this is exactly the Church's stand on this topic.

Seems to me this a case of literal meaning versus something more symbolic. I do not believe that the Bible literally forbids me to use the word "father". This would prevent using the word "father" to refer to a male biological parent.

I think this is the New Testament's version of "Have no other Gods before Me". Jesus teaches us there is only one heavenly father.

I'm sure people will now give me thumbs down for worshiping false Gods.

Some people take every WORD in the bible as literal fact. Get over it. In my church we have both male and female priest so we have both Fathers and Mothers. I like it. Next question.

"Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven." Matthew 23:9

Catholics will say don't take the Bible to litterally. Shame on them. Jesus litterly died for the sins of mankind and to offer salvation to the world. Jesus was literally a Jew. Jesus was literally God in human flesh. Israel is a litteral country. Sin is literall.

Catholics have their "own traditions" and have added books to accomodate the Bible. Shame on them. If don't take Gods Word literally as possible...your in spiritual danger. God gave us rules to follow for a reason. OBEY the Bible. No other book or writing or inspiration is needed!

"You shall not add to the Word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you." Deut 4:2

6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. Galations 1:6-9

"And the LORD said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in My name. I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, divination, a worthless thing, and the deceit of their heart." Jeremiah 14:14

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Matthew 7:15-23
