i despise it - venomously - it's so self-righteous and condescending.

in one way yes in one way no.
I find it nice that someone wants to pray for me on a general basis. Granted I'm a pagan, but having fellow man., whoever they are, be concerned about me is nice and compassionate. However the other side of the coin is that if I say right back I'll cast a spell for you they get offended and huffy.
in traditional religion, prayer is essential for communication with their god. in nontraditional religion, spells are essential for communication with the world around them, which in very loose terms can be seen as their god. So in essence, prayer and spells are the same thing just enacted up differently.
So yeah, sometimes I get offended when some one tells me they'll pray for me. Apparently in this aspect I need some sort of godly intervention. Those words said to end the conversation are like sticking your hand up and saying talk to the hand, because I don't want or need your input any further, I'm getting frustrated by your heathen concepts and notions.

To take offense to someone wanting the best for you is not a wise thing.nor reasonable. in any way I can imagine.but a lot of people take offense with others over things that should not be considered inappropriate. I care about people and I will pray for them.and ask that the Spirit of God be with them and help them. I have seen miracles. real supernatural miracles. happen because of prayer. but if someone says they don't wont my prayers then I don't pray for them.Peace

It depends upon how it's stated. You can generally sense when a person says "I'll pray for you" but really means "You are a lost soul. God is going to send you to hell." To those people, I generally reply with an icy: "If it will make you feel better." But most people who say it really mean well. They are saying, "I shall ask my God, the Source of all Goodness, to send good things to you." How could I possibly be offended by that? I say a very warm "You're very kind. Thank you so much."

I am in intercessory prayer and I pray for people all the time when a christian says I will pray for you they are not trying to make you feel bad or belittle you, when someone prays for you they care to talk to God about you because they are and want the best for you.
I am honored when people pray for my husband and I because God answered prayer and people do care and that makes me feel very special and loved and cared for.
I hope this answer helped you and God bless you and have a good evening.

I really don't get offended because someone says that. I'm an atheist, but I know other people do believe in a god so they're just saying what they know from their belief system. When I want to convey that same sort of message I simply say "I'll keep you in my thoughts." Works great for those sympathy or get-well cards!

I'm pagan also and I also don't believe in satan . I believe that am accountable for what I do. I can't say the devil made me do it...lol. But if someone whats to pray to help me feel better or to be kind, it don't brother me at all. Its all energy that we all share. But if your praying to make me think the way you do then its wrong cause it's my free will to be who I am. My son is sick and all the prays I can get to help are great!

The reason for the person saying it may
1. be unable to answer and has nothing to say but a cliche.
2. means good faith as he can't answer you.
3. aggressively thinking that any reason questions are spiritual problem / attack.
I think I would feel frustrated especially in case 3. Admittting to ignorance will be much better. Unfortunately I can also be blind sometimes.

It's people's way of saying "I feel for you and I can't control what happens in your life so I am going to ask the only person who can and that is God'
People say it be supportive. When I wasn't a Christian I tried to not get pissed off at people who said this to me, b/c they were trying to be supportive and loving by saying it. People trying to be nice deserve an iota of respect too.

Not offensive, just arrogant and thoughtless. Why would you think saying "I'll pray for you" will make me feel better if you don't know whether or not I believe in prayer? It insinuates that it's "normal" to believe prayer works and weird not to, and that's insulting.

I think when someone sincerely takes the time out of their day to pray for a person it shows that the care about you.
It does not offend me at all.
