in What? Why do people spell it "wat"? Is typing it correctly with the h in it that time consuming?

It's scary to see how many misspellings there are on here...and there is a spell check. Thank you education system I guess.

that's funny.
You are asking why people on the net don't spell things out correctly. I appreciate your curiousity as I hate that "netlingo" myself.

most of the ''misspellings'' you will see on forums and internet postings are done purposefully. I can't say a thing about any other language, but in English it is called HAXOR13 or geek speak elite. It is a new phonetic way of spelling out a word with as little letters as posible, mostly because of text messaging.

you are becomes ur
great become gr8
what are you doing? becomes ?wat r u doing

the sounds are the same, but if you don't know the lingo you will get lost easy in the conversation. It's like a written language for internet speak, because certain people are lazy.

I had an 8th grade student try to write a report with things like UR, gonna, U, and luv. She honestly had no idea they were written you are, going to, you, and love.

It makes me wonder if she had bad teachers the past 9 years, or if she just didn't pay attention. I'd probably pick the latter with a lot of students.

Either way, I felt bad for her.

In many dialects of English words that begin with "wh" and words that begin with "w" are pronounced with the same sound. For example, in my native dialect English the words "which" and "witch" are pronounced the same. So if this is true of your dialect, it seems logical to adapt the spelling to fit the pronunciation.

I agree with the previous answerer that it's probably purposeful.

Actually, the h in what is pronounced BEFORE the W

It's pronounced hwat, rather than what.
This may explain hwy some people spell it without the h.

by hwy I mean, of course, why.

heh heh

People can be very lazy when it comes to spelling and grammar, but if you would care to check I nearly always spell right and I am still in school.
