It is called a metaphor.
It was never intended to be taken literally.

Because we believe in God doesn't mean he exists. A lot of kids believe in Santa Claus. And some people even believed Iraq had WMD's.
The story of Adam and Eve is just a fable. There are countless creation myths -- this one just happened to become accepted by the religion that came to dominate Western civilization.
While some people take the story of Adam and Eve literally, science has debunked this myth pretty thoroughly. Yet when dealing with matters of faith, facts don't always persuade people.
So why do we believe in God?
No one knows for sure, of course, but I think it comes from childhood. When you are born, you know nothing of the world other than there are large, powerful beings who give you life and feed and take care of you -- your parents. They may be loving and/or stern, and they seem all-knowing and all-powerful. (Sound familiar?)
These lessons are learned at a very young age, before people can even really think rationally. When we grow up and search for meaning in life, this "belief" system has been programmed into our subconscious by our upbringing.
So basically, when we believe in God, I think we're looking for a loving, powerful parent, so we're not alone in this cold, scary world.
If faith makes you feel good, great. There's no harm in myth so long as it's not used as a reason to persecute others or screw up your life.
If mythology doesn't fulfill you, go get Stephen Hawking's "Universe" (on DVD or the book), and find out what's really going on.

Actually, the Bible tells us of Adam and Eve having 3 sons not two, but it never says that they had no other children, on the contrary, didn't God give them the purpose of multiplying? As for where did God come from, the Bible says he has no beginning nor an end, we can't understand this because we live in a created world in which everything has a beginning and an end.
The truth is, it does not matter where God came from, and asking these pointless questions is only a way of distracting yourself from the truth of the issue; either God is real, in which case you better get to praying, or he is all a figment of 93 % of the worlds Imagination, (not Christians specifically, but all who believe in a god/gods), in which case I have lost nothing except that maybe I could have been more selfish and promiscuos without having to worry about a final judgement. Hmmm...

According to the bible, adam and eve had two sons and three daughters. the sons procreated with the daughters, and somehow this is not considered incest because God said it was not a sin since they were populating the earth.
And I believe most people believe that God either 'always has been and always will be' which I find rather vague, or that he 'blinked himself into existence'.
It amuses me that many people can readily and blindly accept that God was able to create himself from nothing but find it absolutely possible and absurd that life could have evolved on earth without God.
I would like to know how god created himself when he did not exist.

God made several families of the type of Adam and Eve. They were just one example.
He also made a Chinese family, and they had children. Then were was an aboriginal family too.
You sound like you doubt God, so let me reassure your faith.
As for Cain and Abel they had a hundred and fifty-four siblings, and that's cause of all the wives Adam had. Adam had more wives than Warren Jeffs, and never spent a day in jail.

God told Adam and Eve to be fruitful. They had many children. Read through the book of Genesis. This should help. Actually in the beginning, there was incest because we were made in His perfect image. Sin is what started to mess up our DNA through Cane killing his brother. Abel's blood line was still perfect because he was not a sinner, but Cane's was inperfect because of the sin of killing his brother.
When these two blood lines started having babies together is when incest became illegal. This is also when the need for Noah's Ark arised and God wiped out sin for the first time. As for where God comes from, it is like everyone else has said. He is the Alpha and Omega, The Beginning and the End.

Have you ever heard of the concept of outside of time. God is outside of time. He didn't come from anywhere. He was always outside of time. It's like the big bang theory. You go back to the big bang and that is the beginning of time also. There was no time before the big bang. It's like going North until you reach the North Pole an trying to go father North. You can't do it. Now that I have made it all crystal clear to you I hope you will award me the points if you have time. xx
P.S, Oh Cane married his sister. ugh incest dreadful isn't it.
Adam and Eve did not join a group of other people when they left the Garden of Eden the girl who said that obviously did not read the Bible. There was no other people just them and their children idiot.
Kisses Dr Atheist you are right why do I keep trying.

Iraq. God is really a Muslin-Bhuddist, who when gave marching orders to the masses of slow-witted minions, who in turn misinterpreted it and then evolved into Jews and Christians. Those who missed the message ended up being atheists and Hara Kristnas. So to answer you question God comes in many forms and beliefs and you can never judge a Bible by its cover just because it was on Oprahs Book of the Month Club recommendation list.

We are all related to Adam & Eve if you can believe that stupid story. No one really knows for sure who were the first humans on this earth, how could they? Get off the bible thing as it is the greatest book of fiction ever written.
