The best way I have found is when he wakes up - take him out - directly after he eats - take him out. When you see him looking for a spot - circling and smelling grab him and take him out. Make sure you use the "want to go outside?" phrase every time. If you catch him in the act of "going" yell to get his attention and grab him up and take him out.
I think you see the point. Its a lot of taking him out. Always use the same door. It is a long process and can try your patience but very worth it in the long run
Lot's of Luck and Congratulations on your new addition.

Make sure the pup has a kennel to go to. This will let the puppy feel safe, kind of like a den. Show the kennel to the puppy, and let it know it is a positive thing. Put toys in it, and make it comfortable for the pup. Use positive reinforcement with the pup. If there are some rooms you don't want the dog in, make sure to make this clear to the dog. When the dog is in the right room, praise it, and give it a treat. When the dog is in the wrong room, say "Uh Oh" and correct the dog by moving it to the right room. Eventually the dog will understand that when you say "Uh Oh" that it made a mistake, and if the dog moves out of the room and into the right room by itself, praise it. Same goes with furniture and bathroom. Goes to the bathroom in the house, "Oh Uh" and place the pup outside. Hope this helps.

Wow 5 weeks old is so young to be away from his mom and littermates. Because he didn't stay with his mom longer, that means a little more work for you. I would highly recommend a crate. He might cry for awhile, but he will eventually get used to it. Never make him feel that the crate is a form of punishment. It should be a safe place for him. You'll find as time goes by, he might actually go into the crate all by himself. Dogs do not like to potty where they sleep, so he will learn to hold it as long as possible. Make sure you take him outside every hour or so and praise him when he goes outside. If you catch him peeing inside, tell him no and pick him up and put him outside. It will take time and patience, but eventually you all will get it. Good luck!

Sounds like a pain but it has always worked well for me. Pay close attention to your pups toileting needs (i.e if it generally has an accident after eating or has to go every 20 minutes or so). Then put it on a regular toileting schedule. Bring your pup outside at the alloted times and encourage them to "do there business" or whatever cue you want to give. (He/she may not always have to go but encourage it to and still take the breaks) Then give a positive reward (i.e praise and attention ) for going potty. Just as you would a child. If it has an accident inside, scoop the pup up immediately (even if midstream) and bring it outside. Generally speaking catching the pup doing it in the right place and giving it positive reward is the most effective tool. It takes much time and effort but it works. Have patience, remember you didn't learn how to use the potty in one day : ), and Good luck.

I know you did it with your other dogs but stop using this method otherwise your dog will lose respect in you. Take the dog out every hour and ensure that he goes to the toilet, even if it takes him half an hour. Praise him and bring him back in. Then take him out; 15-20 minutes after his dinner Straight after playing When he has woken up and when there has been some excitement in the house eg a visitor. Just ignore him when he toilets in the house, but praise him lots when he goes outside. Remember that toilet training is different for every dog. Some dogs pick it up instantly, whereas some can take several months and it could be up to 8 months before he is fully house trained over night.

Crate training has worked best for me. At 5 weeks they potty and sleep alot.key times to take the puppy out is after waking in the morning or anytime of day after eating and drinking at 5 weeks for one he still should be with his mother.anyways at 5 weeks he will have to go about every hour to hour and half.I can get over him being a way from his mom did you buy from a breeder? the crate is best for at night and when you are not at home he will have oops until he is about 4 to 5 months then he should not potty in his crate but will still need to go out every 2 to 3 hours.remember crates are for sleeping and keeping him safe when your not home they are not for living in.you are going to have fun with him being so young.Have patience.

Make sure that you don't feed him after say 7 at night. Don't leave the food out so that he can eat when he wants.
Cockers are great learners. Congratulations.

I agree totally with the first answer - take them out, take them out, take them out! Remember to praise your new puppy lavishly each time they go potty outside. They want to please you!
