The best one that I've ever used was the CHI ceramic straightener. It got my long thick curly hair straight as a board and it stayed that way. It's also not as bad for your hair as others. However, they are about $180, but you can usually find them on sale or on ebay. They are definately worth it. A good low cost one that I got at walmart it the conair ceramic straightener. Just make sure you buy ceramic, metal will damage your hair and doesn't do much for straightening. Best of luck and Merry Christmas!

Yeah everyone is going to say CHI because it is, but its expensive. It is an awesome straightener and it was rated America's #1 straightener. If you're looking for something cheaper check out ones at Sallys Beauty Supply store, if you have one around. I wouldnt go for the ones at Walmart and places like that. I've had Hot tools, Jilbere, Helen of Troy, and Titanium Tools are some brands I can think of. And check out the ones with a gold plate, and they get to a good temperature but make sure when you get a straighener and it can get pretty hot have some kind of Thermal product that will protect from thermal use. (link below) I use that one.

most people think it the chi is cause it has been the #1 straightener
but the new straighteners by HerStyler are the best straighteners they dont damage your hair like the Chi dose. I own one and can tell a difference since i started to use the Forever (that is the name of my straightener)it makes my hair love way healthy.I know the HerStyler is better than the Chi because my friend has a Chi and is not happy with the damage she has to try to prevent

I just recently got a Conair Dry 'N' Straight Ceramic Straightener. It works pretty good, but it is a cheaper one. If you are looking into more expensive ones, go to an ULTA shop near you and ask them for one. Theirs usually range from about $50.00 - $100.00. The one i got was only $39.99. It dries your hair and straightens it at the same time, so it saves you time. Hope you find what you are looking for! :-)
Ciao for now,
Tara

Don't use a wet-to-dry straightener. it's crap and very damaging.
I LOVE my CHI. it really is the best because it makes your hair feel silky and thin. it's amazing. My hair is so out of control but i don't have to worry about it. i get out of the shower, let it dry naturally and then straighten it... and it's amazing... it also heats up very fast - within a minute
