I was raised in the 60s and 70s in a Southern Baptist town. Most residents were regular church goers, the town was segregated into white and "colored", most whites were Dixiecrats and then Moral Majority. I was taught the following items were sins that would lead to hell:
drinking alcohol
smoking tobacco
females wearing make-up and short skirts
having sex or marriage between whites and blacks
if you were Catholic or Communist
homosexuality
pre-marital sex

Are these items still sins? Why or why not? If some are no longer considered sins because the church was wrong about that behavior, could the church be wrong about other behaviors?

The church does not decide what sins are. The Bible lays it out cleary.
Alcohol in itself is not sin, only drunkeness. Jesus made wine for his first miracle.

Tobacco isn't a listed sin, the idea behind that is that it is not taking care of the temple (our bodies).

Make up is fine, short skirts go under the category of dressing modestly as not to make our brothers stumble.

Interaccial marriage is ok. That was just a prejudiced rule.

Catholics and Communists are not listed as sins. some of their practices are sinful.

homosexuality and pre-marital sex are sins.

I will add that your particular sins are not what lead you to hell. Your ticket is already in hand when you start out. The only way out is to have a personal relationship with Christ. When that happens, He helps you to see what is sin and what isn't and then you just try to follow His direction.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't remember seeing in the bible that drinking was a sin. I thought it said intoxication was a sin. I don't remember seeing tobacco in the bible, nor marriage between races. Some Christians believe to have read some sort of scripture saying that homosexuality was a sin. When it comes to females wearing makeup and sexy clothes....I know I never saw that in the bible. And when it comes to Catholics and Communism.....I really have no idea. Catholics are a sub religion of Christianity....so why would that be a sin?

God stays the same. In a church that follows the Bible and not whatever suits them, what constitutes a sin stays the same.

Drinking alcohol is not described in the Bible as a sin, but drunkenness is.
I don't believe smoking is ever mentioned at all in the Bible, but we are to take care of our bodies. Makeup is not mentioned, but I don't see why it would be a sin, or wearing *flattering* clothing. Seeking to seduce another than your spouse is a sin. Interracial marriage is not sin...racism is a sin, as it is rooted in hatred. *Practicing* homosexuality and pre-marital sex are declared sin by the Bible.

First let's not use the term colored that's not cool. Now moving forward.....Jesus first miracle was turning water into wine. So know driniking alcohol is not a sin it becomes a sin when you over indulge in it......The bible tell us that our bodies are a temple so there for we should be careful what we put in it. but there's nowhere in the bible to support the theory that smoking is sinful...... majority of the women in the bible are said to be beautiful and it goes further to state how they sprayed themselves with nice perfume and often fixed themselves up. .... And as far as being in a relationship outside of your race...God is not partial so we shouldn't be either.....Homosexuals..This was the very reason he destroyed sodom and gomorrah. And pre marital sex. Use your judgement

Alcohol can lead to sin, but in and of itself is not a sin.

Same thing for make up and short skirts.

Tobacco is just gross.

Interracial marriage is not a sin. Having sex outside of a one man/one woman marriage is, regardless of the race of the participants.

Being a Catholic is not a sin (I hope!). Being a communist is just plain silly.

Being a homosexual is not a sin. Engaging in a sexual act with a person that is not your spouse (again, see one man/one woman marriage) is a sin.

Pre-marital sex? sin.

As a Bible Thumper,it does not matter what a church says(unless they only stick to the Word of God and nothing else)or what generation you grew up in.The Bible is the Word which will condemn and vividly tells people which is a sin and which is not a sin. Alcohol is sinful because all people who drink alcohol do so to get drunk, and the Bible says NO DRUNKARD shall inherit the Kingdom of God.I know of NO ONE who drinks alcohol that DOES NOT HAVE THE SOLE PURPOSE OF ONE DESIRE,and that is to GET DRUNK,which IS A SIN! Tobacco is damaging to the body,in all forms. The Bible says our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and human beings are created in the image of God,therefore, you are DESTROYING the very body that God gave to you! It is sin to destroy your body IN ANY WAY,SHAPE OR FORM! Make up for females, that is a personal conviction.I dont use makeup because i know the history behind makeup, and the first women that used makeup were prostitutes,i dont want to be identified with that sinful practice.God made EVERYONE beautiful, who art thou wicked mankind to accuse God that He made unbeautiful women? One should focus on the inner beauty rather than the outer beauty. Short skirt's or ANY clothing that is tight or revealing on a woman IS SIN! The Bible says women are to dress MODESTLY! The word modest means, loose fitting clothing.Females KNOW that dressing immodestly IS A SIN,and they do it to arouse males. There is no sin for interacial marriage. The false religion of catholicism is one of idolatry,Mary worship instead of Christ-only worship.Communism is a sin because they DENY the very existence of GOD! The sin of sodomy is clearly spelled out in the Scriptures as being SIN! Premarital sex (called Fornication in the Bible)IS A SIN! There are so many false "christians" out there telling people that these are not sins, when most of them ARE! Want to know the Truth? Get into the Bible for yourself and you will find the Truth that I've shared with you. These are NOT MY SAYING'S,THIS IS FOUND IN THE BIBLE!

Most of these were never sins. Sex outside of marriage was always fornication and sin as it is today.

All are potentially sinful but thank God for the sacrament of reconciliation.
