if you count text books, notebook paper, handouts, and printing, about one tree

Much less than one. A single tree can produce hundreds of pounds of paper, and most students don't even use 10 pounds. I am not counting books, just notebook paper. The books get reused. At least they didn't when I went to school. It does seem as if the kids are carrying a lot more stuff to an from school these days. I never needed a backpack, even in high school.
