If you're trying to scold at your kitten for climbing/attacking your Christmas Tree, these are some possible ways to say (Dont touch the tree):
A) Put a barrier of some sort around your Christmass Tree to prevent your cat from making contact
B) I'm sure there are some kinds of materials they sell that repel cats (Liquids?) that you can use (NOT ON YOUR CAT). You could put it on your Christmas Tree or around it to prevent your cat from coming near.
C) (IF) You'r Christmas Tree is in a room that you dont use very much (that has a door) just close the door when no ones using it or when someones in it.
D) Keep watch and everytime you see your cat going near the Christmas Tree, carry him/her away.
E) Occupy your cat, you could get him/her a scratching post, a self automated toy, a remote controlled mouse (Yes they do sell those, I know for a fact ((I have one)) ).
F) This isnt exactly my best choice...Shut her up in a room with marbles and toys that she could play with, and someone to play with (I wouldnt though)
G) Get/Make something that would grab your cat's attention from the tree (You could take some boxes and make a play house or a tunnel of some sort, or buy a post or play pen)
H) Again, not the best choice, move you Christmas Tree to a basement or attic (Somewhere that you dont use) until (A couple days before?) Christmas Eve or Chrismas
I) If there are ornaments and other strings and catchy things on your Christmas tree remove them until Christmas Eve- You could have a family get-to-gether and hang them back up again
J) Punish your cat (Not harshly) everytime he jumps on your tree, spray it, flick it's nose, toss it (GENTLY) away, ect
Some solutions (Above) arent even saying (NO). They're just other ways to prevent your cat from attacking your Christmas Tree.
How ever if you're cat keeps eating smaller plants, other ways of saying (Dont eat plants!) are:
A) Spraying the plant(s) with repelant
B) Moving the plant(s) to a higher area, unreachable for your kitten
C) Flicking your kitten's nose when ever he/she tries to eat or damage the plant
D) When ever your kitten tries to eat part of the plant, pry open (Not harshly) his/her mouth and take the remaining plant out of his/her mouth and push your kitten away
E) Either put something near your plant(s) to scare your cat every time he/she gets near it, or scare your cat yourself when ever your cat gets near the plant
As you can see there are many possible ways to prevent your cat from doing something wrong without scolding at your cat, or scolding your cat in many diffrent ways to prevent him/her from doing something wrong.
Other ways to scold at your cat may include:
A) Locking your cat in a room (Not for long, the least you could do is put a couple of toys and needed items ((Such as litter box, food, ect.)) in the room) whenever she/he does something wrong repeatedly.
B) Shake him/her GENTLY, for a few SECONDS. Do NOT (I repeat ((!NOT!)) shake your cat brutally AND for more then three seconds at the maximum when ever he/she does something wrong repeatedly.
C) Puting a leash on your cat (Do not put a short leash on your cat unless needed or for serious safety reasons) until he/she learns not to do what ever he/she is doing wrong.
So there are many solutions. Scolding or not, you'r cat will just have to learn either way!
Have a nice day and remember treat your cat with utmost patience and love!

The CORRECT answer is that by now, the cat has forgotten that he even did it, so, if you tried to punish him now, he would not know why you are doing it, and that would basically amount to cruelty. Punishing the animal is not the solution anyway.
It is in the cat's nature to be curious, and here you have this huge tall tree with lots of shiny dangling things that sparkle and move. It's like a playground for a cat. That would be like punishing a child for eating a piece of candy when you put him in a room full of it.
The solution is to A) anchor the tree better so it's harder to knock over, and B) keep the cat out of that room until after Christmas. Keep him in another area of the house. If that's not possible, there are sprays, etc. that are scented to repel pets from things like furniture, etc....this might work if you spray the area around the tree and/or the lower parts of the tree. And shoo the cat away if he goes near the tree. After a while he'll get bored with it anyway.
But don't punish the cat now.
Hope this helped you out.

You cannot punish an animal after it's over and done. If you punish it now, it will have no idea why you are punishing it...it will simply view you as being mean. A great way to teach cats is a small spray bottle filled with water. Each time your cat goes near the tree, give it a spray. Regardless of what people think, cats can be trained. My best friend taught her cat to fetch and a relative taught her cats to scratch at the door to go out like a dog so she would not have to have a litter box in her home.

It's difficult to 'punish' a cat. They don't do well with being punished and really don't know what they're being punished for.
Actually expecting your cat to stay away from and out of your Christmas tree is an unrealistic expectation. Cats are curious by nature, hence the saying "curiosity killed the cat."
You can try buying something like Boundary® Indoor/Outdoor Cat Repellent from Lambert Kay, which you can spray on the tree. It helps keep pets and strays away from shrubbery, furniture, and garbage cans, and other areas you wish pets to stay away from.
If it's feasible, just don't give the cat access to the tree, which may be easier said than done.
We stopped putting up Christmas trees because we have 4 dogs and a cat. I'd rather have no tree than a sick or hurt pet. Luckily, it's an option for us because we don't have kids. Someday, when they're older, we might be able to have one, but in the meantime, we do fine without it.
I hope this helps...Merry Christmas.

Your cat will not understand any punishment that occurs too far after the incident, so even a few minutes after is too late for any "punishment" because your cat will not associate knocking down the Christmas tree a while back with you suddenly going crazy. He will just think sometimes you go crazy! =) If you have a clean spray bottle handy you can put a little water in it and set it near the tree. Then if you see him going close to it, or starting to knock it over again, give him a light spray (not drenching him or getting it in his eyes, just a small spray for a bit of a shock) and say no. If that doesn't work the first time, it will when he realizes every time he goes near the tree he gets wet! Just make sure the tree lights aren't plugged in when you spray! It wouldn't help to electrocute yourself or the cat... ugh!

The tree falling over has probably already scared him, and rather than punishing him after the fact, you should work on preventative measures. A few things to try- spraying him with a water bottle, as other people have mentioned. alternatively, you can make the area under the tree unattractive to him. try slightly crumpled aluminum foil, which most cats hate feeling under their feet, or place mousetrap around the tree under sheets of paper. when the cat steps on the paper, he'll spring the mousetraps, which will make a great deal of noise and motion, but shouldn't trap him since the paper will be between your cat and the trap. I've never personally tried that solution, bu several cat books I've read have suggested it.

I secure the tree to the wall, I have cats and small kids. Don't forget the cat is acting on natural instincts climbing the tree and punishing him would be wrong and cruel. Just think that would be like punishing a human for looking at an attractive member of the opposite sex!!!

Cats looooove Christmas trees! My cats used to get all excited whenever we brought a tree home. They would grab a decoration in their mouth and run off with it! It was so cute. But then after the tree was fully decorated and just right, we would come home from work and see all of our hard work ruined.
I never punished my cats because it was obvious they loved the tree just as much as we did.
Don't punish your kitty. For one, it will never work, and two, your cat is just having fun. Pick up your tree and fix it up. Either accept that this is just going to happen, or keep your kitty away from the tree. Come on, its the holidays! Tolerate your kitty.

It's pointless. Cat's brains don't work like ours do. There is no way he can assosiate anything you do now with his knocking down the christmas tree. They don't have the ability to make those kind of abstract connections. You will just be doing something unpleasant to your cat, that's all. If you had reacted immediately to him knocking down the tree then possibly, once he'd done it a few times and got the same reaction, then maybe he would decide not to knock down the tree because it always resulted in that reactions, maybe, no guarentees.

Your cat is just curious and is amazed at the lights and especially the bubs. When he or she see's it's reflection it starts to bat at the ordimates. We had a problem with our little cat (lucky) getting in the tree. We went to the local Wal-mart to purchase a 3 pack of mothball hangers. All you have to do is when you set your tree back up put one hanger on the last branch of the tree. Cats have a very sensitive noise. Your cat will stay away. Try it.

Kitties will always be kitties. tie on the lower ornaments the tie the tree into place so kitty won't be able to pull the tree over.
Cats naturally like to climb and hide in high places so it can be hard to keep kitty from doing so in your tree. You could get a little spray bottle of water and if you catch kitty in the act squirt'em a bit...
Be gentle and pet kitty gently and you'll have a friend for life...
Merry Christmas...
