In many cultures, black cats are lucky! I'm sorry to hear about your first two dieing so young, but you're right, it's more likely that being outdoors was the problem than the color. If you get another black kitty (and you should, they are the least frequently adopted and they need good homes, too!), make sure to keep him/her inside where he'll/she'll be safe.

Well, I've got a 4 and a half year old black cat and I'd say he is VERY lucky. In the past 2 weeks he has chewed completely through 2 electrical cords while they were plugged in and he is still alive to meow about it!
I did have a black cat die young ONLY because he was an outdoors cat and was hit by a car. Cats belong indoors... really not much to do with luck, regardles of the color of the cat.

Personaly, I don't bend to superstition, though the only all black cats I have known never made it past 3years old. This may be because of ignorance and some people thinking black cats are bad luck, but I do find it odd that the friend *who has owned all the black cats I've known* allways lost them to cars, neighboring dogs, her dogs, idiot people.l
This may be because she didn't exactly allow them in the house, though. Ever. I find that odd, considering she let all of her dogs run around indoors even when they had the mange *and I still don't quite know what that is, beyond a skin problem* so it's probably just poor parenting.
But as for the superstition, it's never been passed down that black cats are unlucky, but that they bring bad luck when they cross you path. They shouldn't be unlucky themselves, but if you own the black cat and it crosses your path, then you kitty getting killed could be unlucky for you. I don't know, but superstition is superstition, meaning that not EVERY time your palm itches you are going to come into money, and stepping on a crack will not break you mother's back.

The only bad luck black cats have is that superstitious people are unwilling to adopt them. The death of your black cats was just a terrible coincidence, and if your cats are all indoors now, that should help protect them from the danger of the natural world. I grew up on a busy street, and our cats were allowed in and out at will into a fenced yard. Of course, some of them got out and got run over anyway, but our black cats were generally the ones that made it the longest.

In the UK (and maybe in the states too) completely black cats are supposed to be lucky. It comes from the fact that they are extremely rare. Even seemingly black cats usually have a bit of white somewhere. They are extremely rare because so many were destroyed during the middle ages because they were thought to be the servants of the devil.
I've had a lot of cats, some died peacefully of old age, some died in tradgic circumstances. It doesn't matter what colour they are, you were just unlucky. Don't be put off getting the cat you want.

No way!!!
I had a pure black, long-haired cat named Jazz who was the best pet I could have ever asked for! He was already 10 years old when I got him from a family that could no longer keep him due to kids' allergies and he lived with me for another 8 years and died at 18 years old last May 2006. I was heartbroken when he died. He outlasted many a boyfriend and was more loyal and cuddly than most of the human men I've been with. He was always there for me and never complained. Well...not much! LOL! :)

I have a black cat, her name is Munch. She is not the friendliest of my cats, but love her anyway. I have had her since she was found on the sidewalk when she was about 1 or 2 days old. Is she unlucky, not to me. Some people do view black cats as unlucky and in other cultures black cats are seen as very lucky.

I have two black cats, Stinkers and her son, Felix. I would have to say that they are very lucky, especially Stinkers (Her real name is Tuesday, but we call her Stinkers because she was so bad when she was little. Whenever she would do something bad we would always tell her, "you little "stinker"). Anyway, I found Stinkers on a busy freeway. Someone must have dumped her there, I can't imagine how she would get there. I risked both of our lives trying to rescue her, but I did. I took her to the Humane Society, but they told me that they would put her to sleep within the hour so I took her home knowing my Dad would disapprove. Stinkers is three years old now and has had a litter of her own. I can't imagine anything happening to her, she is my good luck charm!

i have a black cat about 9 years old he use to be indoor-outdoor when we lived in the country nwo that we live in the city and ina apartment theres no broken basement windows for him to get in and out threw! even if there was i would never let a cat out doors in the city. i belive it was the fact that they where outdoor cats made it more dangerous for them. I hope the neighboor was charged with animal curlty because my friends neighboor shot his cat in the head and the cops never did anything about it they said they can't proove when we had eye witnesses

No domestic cat should be left outdoors because of the dangers you mention. It doesnt matter the color. Black cats do not bring bad luck, but have been a symbol for black magic and witches, which is unlucky for them because they suffer for human ignorance.
