My daughter (2yrs old with thick long hair) has bad dandruff. I use Selsun Blue sensitive skin when I was her hair. The dandruff goes away for a while. Her scalp starts itching and she of course scratches it and it becomes red. She then gets these little sores and scabs in her scalp. Does anyone know what this can be?

Remember she is only 2, so alot of products will be too strong for her scalp. Also I wash her hair once a week.

I would not be able to tell you what it is but it sounds a bit like what my 2 year old had i use baby oil in the bath and yes it got in her hair and it helped big time and no it is not harmful unless you get it in their mouth so be careful give it a try and if it don't work after a while yes go see you doctor. I hope that is helpful please do try oil may be bad for our head but some babies head if washed to much loose their own natural oil so helping your baby by adding a little bit of oil to the hair is not and bad idea.

While I agree with the people who suggested a dermatologist, consider also that if you wash her hair every day that alone could be causeing the problem. Washing hair strips out the natural oils and can dry the scalp. If you've been doing it every day try only washing it every 3 or 4 days for a few weeks and see if that helps.

You need to take her to a dermatologist - could be a variety of skin conditions, not dandruff. I have psoriasis and get scabs on my scalp, then there are prescriptions I use to help - not shampoos. Get it checked out as soon as possible, and diagnosed, because then it is relatively easy to clear up.

I have the same problem. You can rinse her hair with 2 parts water and 1 part listerine. It really works.
