Not as many as the media might portray. I will be very interested in what other people might guess. I was over there twice and never had to raise my weapon towards anyone, but the infantry guys I served with were in a lot of firefights.

What kind of knit wit questions are your teachers asking you? What in the world could knowing this percentage have to do with anything? Are you trying to understand what percentage of deployed soldiers are on the front line versus back in support functions? Or are you trying to derive a figure to make us feel bad that people die in wars?

How about this. If 100% of our 150,000 troops in Iraq (or whatever the number is) could kill a bad guy every day, the war would've been over in about a week. Now that's a figure I want to see!!

studies have shown that a very small percentage of Soldiers are in actual "combat" and a small percentage of those Soldiers are the people who actually do the majority of the killing.

2/3rds of the personnel in Iraq aren't even on the front line if that helps.

Considering the reason there are so many deaths in Iraq is because American soldiers are trespassing where they don't belong, for oil, and that maybe 100 times as many Iraqis have died than Americans, I'd say that each American soldier is responsible for about 100 deaths, even though they personally don't get to pull the trigger on each one.
