one of my professors in law told us for the midterm to focus on a specific thing, so i did. and on the midterm what he told us to study didn't even appear on 1 question. because of that i got a C on midterm. my final is worth 50% and he told us again to study on something specific. but i'm not going to in fact i don't even know what to study. do professors tell us wrong things to study for because they want to see students fail?

I have never had that experience before - the college professors I had always told us that the midterm and final exams were cumulative. Some of mine did a final cumulative after the midterm, others did a full semester cumulative final exam.

I went from being a student to a professor pretty quickly, but I teach painting and drawing. I want all my students to make good grades and I am mostly a push-over. Yet, I am also scatter-brained. So I probably say one thing and end up doing another (even if this is not related to testing, but in class projects).
My suggestion to you is talk to people who have had his class and how they managed. Also make sure to say what you think when you have course evaluations at the end of the year (if you get the chance).

I am a college professor, and I do not want my students to fail. My practice is to tell the students exactly what I want them to know for any given test. This is what I learned from one of my education teachers. I also let them know when information given is not to be tested but might be helpful somewhere down the line. When my students ask me about the practices of another professor, I encourage them to talk to the teacher after re-reading the syllabus. If that is not satisfactory, they need to talk to the dean. If problems are not brought up, then poor practices continue.
