If you have Windows XP, you can go to start->run->type msconfig-> go to startup tab and pick and choose what you want starting up.
If you have Windows 2000, look in the startup menu ( c:\docs and settings\all users\start menu\programs\startup and also the same path except instead of all users, substitute your login name). Once there you can delete what you want. Afterwards, you can go to the registry by typing regedit in the run box. BECAREFULL!! Editing the registry has major effects!! In the registry, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run. You'll see a list of programs on the right. All of those programs startup everytime you use your computer.
Good Luck

Sadly, yes....you have to go to each program and select if it "Loads on Startup," or if it is "In taskbar/tray."
Just right click each program, go under its settings/options and do it from there. It takes time, but also saves you time when loading programs in the future. Almost every program thinks its special enough to load down there...

Try a free tool called autoruns. you can download the latest version at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx
This tool is easy to use and provides the complete list of programs that startup each time you switch on windows. You can just select the programs that are not required at startup, like Quicktime etc.
