You might want to get them a pair of portable binoculars (about $30). If they don't have them get them each a backpack (book bag size). Gives them both more carry-on packing space. Suggest to the mother she use this instead of a purse on her flight and while on shore excursions. On the flight - can pack a lot more into this than into a purse, especially souveniers on the return. On shore excursions, great for carrying purchases, water bottles, camera, clothing, binoculars, etc.

Little late in the year for an Alaska cruise, unless they are going by the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system (better than a cruise), so I assume they are going in the spring. If they are going to the Southeast (Ketchican, Juneau) give them a stylish raincoats and hats, or for old fogies, an umbrella. If they end up in the interior, give them a gold pan, and a good pair of water resistant hiking boots. And don't forget the mosquito repellent.

One of the best things you can give a cruiser is an onboard credit. This can be used towards shore excursions, spa service, etc. Just contact the cruiseline they will be sailing with & they will help you purchase it.
You can also have wine or some type of gift waiting for them in their stateroom.

A travel diary would be nice, especially if they travel often. A gift voucher from the cruise line they will be on, they could use it for shore excursions or spa services for example.

Everyones taste are different. A fruit basket or wine are nice but, not all like them. Travelers Checks, Going away party, Camera. I go to Alaska every year and just about everything you could want is offered. If you want to surprise them go Alaska Shirt.com and order them some Tee's. Hope they enjoy their trip and whatever you decide to give them.

I would give a gift certificate for the cruise line (Royal Caribbean, Princess, Carnival), or you can get them onboard credit they can use.

How about a bon voyage gift basket to be waiting in their cabin on debarking? My In-laws did this for me and I loved it!

If you can find out what cruiseline, or you know who their travel agent is, you can go through cruiseline and have something sent to their cabin.
