I am buying my boyfriend a fly rod and reel for christmas..it is for catching tarpon. I don't know what type of retrieve to get him..left hand or right hand? He is right handed, but I don't know how it works with fishing.

For Tarpon I would recommend getting the reel for the opposite of his casting arm - if he casts right-handed, get a reel that has the retrieve knob on the left. Most of today's reels (the good ones)
are interchangeable between right and left hand retrieve.

I would recommend a reel that would accommodate at least a
10 weight fly-line + 250/300 yds of backing for tarpon,
preferably a large arbor variety. Make sure it is a saltwater reel,
since they are made to be corrosion proof.

Some brands to consider are Orvis, Lamson, Abel and Ross
