Did you get it done with a gun or with a needle?
As any piercer will tell you (although I am not one), it's best to get pierced with needles. Gunned piercings stress the ear too much, adding unneeded trauma to an already traumatic experience for your ear. There is also a greater risk of infection and rejection of the earring. Gunned piercings are also more painful. That said, cartilage piercings hurt more in general, since they're harder than lobes. Use the antiseptic liquid dillegently and try to get some sea salt to do a soak with (very helpful as it's antibacterial and soothing). Tattoo and piercing shops carry this. 24 hours is a rather small window of time, if you ask me, HOWEVER, if you feel that your ear is infected go to a doctor right away. The ear's cartilege has an inside are that holds the infection. Since it cannot escape (ie. move around), your ear may collapse if the infection goes untreated.
For more information (and photos of aforementioned collapsed ear) visit the site linked below. And for the love of reason, go to a real piercer next time!!!

WELL I GOT BOTH OF MINE DONE BACK IN EARLY SEPTEMBER AND MINE STILL HURTS ON ONE YEAR. THERE IS NO SWELLING OR REDNESS THOUGH JUST TENDERNESS. JUST KEEP PUTTING THAT SOLUTION ON IT THAT THEY GIVE YOU AFTER GETTING IT PIERCED. ALSO GENTLY TURN THE EARING SO THAT IT DOESN'T CRUST OVER. AFTER A FEW DAYS IF IT'S STILL SWOLLEN AND RED THEN YEAH I SUGGEST YOU GO TO THE DOCTORS. I HOPE THAT HELPS EVEN A LITTLE BIT. SORRY I CAN'T OFFER MORE INFORMATION.

i don't have my cartilage pierced but i would say it will hurt for 2-3 weeks because your cartilage is sensitive and it will prolly be tender for a while---you will know if it is infected and if it is, go see a doctor.
