last night i went in to check on my mom while she was sleeping because she was sick. then a few minutes later i heard her moaning and whimpering like she was crying. i thought she was awake so when i looked at her she was still sleeping. but it sounded exactly like she was crying. she is a little depressed by the way.

Yes, you can. I cried in my sleep a few times after my father died. It usually woke me up, but it was obvious that I had been crying for some time before it woke me up.

People are different, but for me it was definitely a manifestation of emotional distress - in other words, depression.

Often people have sad dreams. Because you are in the sad situation while dreaming, you can respond by crying. Most people wake up as they hear themselves crying. Some dont and carry on or change into another sleeping cycle.
You could have given her a hug and say some soothing words if you feel comfortable with that. That would be how she would have comforted you if the situation was reversed.
Its funny that we have no qualms about comforting our pets who cry in their sleep but are embarrassed to do the same to our beloved "humans" lol.
Dont make too much out of it, maybe the dream was that she hid that last piece of cake in the fridge and you took it so she cried and cried.

It means that she was having perhaps a bad dream or due to her depression at th momment caused an instant reaction to her physical body at rest to release an emotional outburst.

Bad dream, I'd say. (If she sits up and screams in her sleep, that would be "night terrors.") Everyone cries, moans, etc in their sleep at one time or another.
