Yes, parrots are high maintenance. They are also not cheap to maintain. I suggest a lot of research. There are many parrot communities online, such as lj parrot_lovers and http://www.theperch.net

Depending on what kind you want, parrots range in price from about $20 (budgies) to over $1000 (large parrots like cockatoos)

A cage can range from about $50 (budgie cage) to thousands of dollars.

Then you need food. You'll also need a variety of perches.

Parrots need a lot of mental stimulation, and that means a lot of toys. They'll need to be rotated on a regular basis.

When you first get your bird, you'll need to see an avian vet, which can cost upwards of $250 for the proper tests. You can find an avian vet in your area at http://aav.org/vet-lookup

Parrots (and when I say this I'm thinking, African Gray, Cockatoo, Macaw, Amazon, etc.), are very high-maintenance, of course it depends on the kind. They have the intelligence of a two-year old, and need consistency from early on.
I personally have a Double-Yellow Headed Amazon which I spend many hours a day with. He gets freshly prepared foods (cooked pasta, grains, veggies, fruits) each day which I prepare that day, and each week his groceries are around $25. Plus he LOVES to chew on wood. I have to replace any wood toy in his cage every couple days b/c he will tear it apart. The bottom of his cage gets cleaned out once a day, and his cage gets a complete scrub-down (including toys, perches, and play areas) and disinfected once a week. He is very easy-going, and hardly screeches.
On the other hand, we used to have a Cockatoo that was quite amusing, but extremely loud. We ended up having to get rid of him b/c he was just too loud and too much to handle.

Definitely do your research before buying a parrot and talk to knowledgeable people, not just those in the pet store.

Good luck

My email is down but .....i have an Amazon Blue fonted Parrot and 2 other birds they are high maintenance I would suggest looking up a rescue in your area and volunteering
hat is where I got mine and I only paid for the vet bills incurred while at the rescue
they will also be able to help you find appropriate cages for less and are a wealth of info

Parrots come in hundreds of varieties. A simple way to understand the level of maintenance is this: the larger the bird the more care and time they require.

I have a Cockatoo (Umbrella) and he requires 1 to 2 hours a day out of cage and in my lap. They are like two year children and live to be 50 - 75 years of age. Be VERY careful when purchasing a parrot.

Think of a parrot as a 4 year old child, becuase they are proven to have a 4 yr old human's intellagence. I have spent 7 years training mine to be human like such as when he wants to go to bed, when he is hungry, etc. He has alot of attention needs. Also, for instance if you don't live alone the parrot will attach him self to one owner and hate the others. Mine is in love with me, but hates my boyfreind of 7 years too. They are also emotional. Best advice is to get a baby bird. They are more loving and affectionate. I got mine when he was 2 years old and he had no human attention and training so he is not always the most cuddly parrot! I sure hope this helps you. Don't be scared, they are wonderful animals and mine brings alot of joy to my life.

My brother and sister-in-law got a couple of parrots for their family and after three months got rid of them because they didn't research how high maintenance any bird really is. U have to keep their bowls full of water and food. Buy toys that'll keep them amused. Clean their cages daily or every other day so u don't get sick from their droppings, feathers, and mites. And worse of all they don't always just talk their screech these god-awful screeches that r ear bursting. Stick to fish they're cleaner and much more quieter.

Parrots are VERY high maintenance because they're so smart. They need a lot of company. You will need to spend 4 or more hours a day with a parrot to keep it from going crazy. When they get bored and lonely they pick out their own feathers and don't eat and get other bad behaviors, and once they start it's hard to stop them.

Yes they are. They need a lot of expensive foods, toys, perches, big (expensive) cages, to see an avian certified vet (with visits at least $200). They are messy, noisy, demanding and destructive. Take a look at (or subscribe) to BIRD TALK. It's a great magazine with tons of information about pet birds. If this is your first bird, i suggest a parakeet (like cockatiel, budgie, lovebirds) to start out with. but, birds are very rewarding. they are so intelligent and loving. but make sure you do your research!! also, i highly suggest you adopt instead of buy from a pet store or breeder. make sure you make this decision wisely because birds live for a long time! smaller ones live to around 30 years and larger ones (cockatoos and macaws) to 80 years. and, you can find an avian vet near you at www.aav.org/vet-lookup good luck!

Sorry yet I agree collectively with your mom. possibly look for an outstanding poultry thats plenty greater fee-effective like a budgie. A cockatoo can stay an quite long term and you won't have time for it for the time of severe college and faculty. they desire toys and a few interest to be chuffed. they are in a position to be very noisy and it will consume a honest volume of seed and a few fruit or vegetables so some money a week for that. you will want a big cage , seed dish, water dish, grit dish and a few toys. The cage desires cleansing each few days. you could instruct an grownup poultry to step up onto your hand, and to declare some words. It desires to income which you wont injury it , and you desire to be careful approximately it biting you.

Probably no more than any other pet. I had a Blue Front Amazon. Keep this in mind, parrots can live for 50 years or more, so this would be a life long commitment! Are you ready for that?

Please think this over carefully before jumping into it.

Good Luck
