....... yet make up about 10 percent of thr general population.

Christians represent 75 percent of the population and also represent 75 percent of the prison population.

This means that atheists are 50 times less likely to offend.

What does this say about the christian belief that their religion makes them better people and that atheists who don't share this belief must be morally bankrupt as a result.

I wonder how many christians who arte desperate to be right at all costs and hate the idea of cold hard facts casting their beliefs in a negative light will use the old "Well they were atheists when they committed the crime but they found god while in prison" excuse.

Get A Grip

Please explain how atheists represent 0.209 percent of the prison population yet 10 percent of the general population means they are more likely to be in prison than christians.

I suggest you take a maths for beginners class.

More proof that "figures never lie, but liars use figures".

The questioner's premise crumbles when one recognizes that parole boards tend to look more kindly on those who "find religion" during incarceration.

A discerning person notes that the so-called "list" does not mention whether each inmate acquired his professed faith before or after his incarceration, or whether his so-called religious affiliation is formal or merely "self-described". As the saying goes: "There are no atheists in the foxhole", and apparently that is also true in prison.

it must be that the documents for loose and prisoned are attained otherwise. How did they get those documents? Atheists represent 10% of the inhabitants. became this from census consequences? if so, it must be as precise stat as you ought to get, because no-one is there judging. Atheists represent a million% of reformatory inhabitants. at the same time as a prisoner is admitted to reformatory, how do they stumble on his non secular idea? this is not from the census using the indisputable fact that counsel is nameless. So in the present day we've a topic achieving a similar result, because the approach of achieving it really is different? ought to this is that they ask what faith were you christened or a similar question? it really is my concept that it is an inaccurate statistic till you could educate that a similar strategies are used oftentimes inhabitants and reformatory inhabitants.

I'd be very interested about why that actually is, simply as a psychology minor.

For those who have responded to the question with ridiculous ideas about how statistics work, here's how it goes:

- Assume criminal activity happens in a normal distribution in the populace
- The incidence of religion in the general population should match those who engage in criminal behaviour (i.e. the ratio or percentages should match)
- For Christianity, this is true. 75% in the population, 75% in jail.
- For Atheism, it's false:10% in the population, 0.2% in jail.

So! Why are we missing so many atheists in jail?

Atheists, on average, are smarter and better educated. Better educated people tend to get jobs rather than commit crimes. Christians are highly diverse, so they would be expected to have a proportional number of criminals.

A better question is, what 15 (or less) percent of the population is 24 percent of the criminals? Betcha it's not Jews...

It could be that atheists dont complain against each other when there is a crime. Ms Ohare took of with a pile of money and nothing was done about it.

Because atheists have to live within their own moral and ethical codes and don't operate under the umbrella of "I'll commit this sin (crime) and be forgiven on Sunday".

Samurai Jack is 100% correct.
I have yet to meet a christian that I would trust with anything more dangerous than a burned-out match.
Atheists on the other hand, I would have no problem with turning my back on one even if they had a loaded firearm in their hand.

Obvious. Atheists are, in general, more intelligent and higher educated and, therefore, more likely to have good jobs and satisfying lives. That makes them less likely to find themselves in a criminal situation. Also, I suppose, being smarter, maybe they get caught less.
