Pedigree, Beneful, or Dog Chow?

There are many high quality dog foods available these days..I used to feed Nutro Chicken/Rice...My pups grew great, and, as my breed is long-coated, they had gorgeous coats in no time...
However, their teeth were always stained..I never knew why, but they seemed to need constant cleaning, to be ready to show..

So, I switched to Eukenuba, and they had better teeth, and nice coats..but bowels were always loose...

I fed Abady's for 2 litters, and liked what it did for the pups..but it stank..and was too un-handy....

I fed Purina Pro Plan when it came out..Pups did well..no complaints...

However, my supplier recommended Canidae 21/2 years ago..WOW! I never knew that my oldsters could be so rejuvenated! Suddenly they were putting on gorgeous coats, and acting as puppies..full of play..dancing as we walked...It just blew me away...
Then I took a 10 year old to have a cyst removed, and the vet came out amazed at her blood-work..he said that it was that expected in a 4-5 year old...He also said that he always cleans teeth while they are 'under', but that her teeth were absolutely clean..

I took another in to be spayed, at 7 years old, and the vet was amazed at how white and clean her teeth were..and then when he took out stitches..commented that she healed so fast that the incision was already hard to see...

All my dogs have just thrived on Canidae, and I would sure recommend it..It is made from all human grade ingredients, and natural preservatives..
there are other foods that are likely as good..but, as Canidae is easy to find, and they are doing so well, I wouldn't want to switch..
Other great dog foods that you can find most places, are Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, Wysong, Natural Balance, Royal Canine...
Ypu won't find a dog food that is worhty of your dog in the grocery store..However, of the ones you listed, Pedigree is the only one that doesn't use euthanized animals in the 'meat meal'.

None. All of these are crap. The ingredients are as low-quality as you can get. Ground yellow corn and by-products are not ingredients your dog should be eating. They can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and other health concerns. I suggest you visit these two websites to choose a better brand for your dog.
www.dogfoodproject.com
www.dogfoodanaylsis.com

Beneful and Dog Chow are the same good in essence. Both are made by the same parent company, Purina, which is actually made by Nestle Foods. Nestle is under another big umbrella company, which does do animal testing. That is also known as cruelty to animals.

I suggest the following as a much better choice:
Natural Balance
Castor and Pollux
Canidae
California Naturals
Eagle Pack
Merrick
AvoDerm

I highly suggest Merrick, AvoDerm, and Natural Balance. All of these are human-grade dog foods, meaning a human could eat them and be healthy. There are no fillers or by-products. Dogs do not need corn or wheat in their diets, Not to mention stupid ingredients such as corn husks or peanut shells.

Pedigree basically does not have one good ingredient on it's list.
Another note, Iams and Eukanuba are the same thing. They are both made by Procter and Gamble, a compayny which openly admits to animal testing. Plus, the ingredients are just crap. I hate their moniker-Everything your dog needs, and nothing he doesn't. I hate it, because it is so beyond the truth. It is a blatant lie. What dog needs ground yellow corn, or by-products, Mr. Iams ad voice?!!!
Also, someone else mentioned Royal Canin, but if you read the ingredients, they cannot really call themselves high-quality. I fed their small active dog formula to my 8 year old agility Mini Spitz Champion, and she had terrible smelling runny stolls. I switched her off of it fast. They also use ground rice and poultry by-products, which do not count as high-quality. For the price, they are really ripping people off who do not know how to read the labels.

I hope you choose the right food for your dog.

Thanks for asking. It's always good to raise questions. We are, none of us, born KNOWING what is good for our companion animals. A vet will know best for your dog: its breed, size, age, condition, activity level, etc. All that is just as important as the kinds and quantity of foods you give your dog. Some people cook their dog's food from scratch. Others use a standardized kibble in order to ensure the right balance of fat, protein, and carbohydrate. There are always questions about preservatives, additives, etc., and, on the other hand, supplementary vitamins, nutrients, condition-specific nutriceuticals such as glucosamine. The things to avoid, unquestionably, are chocolate (the "darker," the more theobromide, which is what causes kidney failure), onions, beans, chicken bones (anything that's splinters or is sharp), grapes and raisins in any quantity. But your dog's size, age, and health might warrant other exclusions as well. If you're looking for supplementing your dog's food with human-quality foods (meaning, you'll cut back a certain portion of the dog food in order to keep your dog from consuming too many calories), it's always good to think about vegetables. Making your own dog biscuits is easy with simple, natural, whole ingredients. Peanut butter, garlic, whole wheat, etc. Recipes abound on line. Making stock, can yield meat-flavored vegetables (carrots, potatoes, turnips). It's easy to look at the thoughtful sites that dog people have created on the Web. Rice, spaghetti? They're fine. They're just rather empty calories, so they're simply good for energy, not nutrition. Beans, on the other hand, can cause intestinal gas that's difficult for dogs to eliminate.

I can't say it is better, but it is what I feed my dogs an they are very heathly with good teeth and coats. It is called Solid Gold, everything in it is natural and healthly for them. The foods you have listed above have a lot of fillers which is mostly corn. Corn or by products are hard on the pups digestive system.

Personally, I feed my boys Innova Evo because it is all natural, no grain dry kibble. Grain is not processed by the dog so it's just a filler to make them full and is passed through into their waste which you than clean up. The food is made up of meats and vegetables.. it is equivalent to a BARF diet but in kibbly form. They also offer large and small sized kibble as well as red meat and a reduced calorie version. also, this is rated as a all life stages food so you do not need to switch your puppy to an adult formula to senior formula..they can take Innova Evo all their life.

When I did a price comparison of Innova Evo vs Iams and Eukanuba and other common brands I found that per pound Innova Evo only cost about 10-20 cents more per pound than these offer more readily available brands. Natura (who makes Innova Evo) limits how many stores in an area can carry their food as well as limit shipping out of state to ensure the quality of the food.

Buying food in bigger bags is cheaper than the small bags but remember to only buy a bag that can be consumed in six months because after that time the nutrients can "leak out".

Don't feed dogs wet/canned food it may have close to the same nutrients as dry but it does not offer the dental benefits that kibble does.

Of the choices you have given I think Pedigree.

of course there are better foods available, the choice of food is a personal one, depending upon cost, individual dog, personal finances, and other variables, such as availability in your lifestyle.

There are different standards for food set by the USDA, such as premium labled foods, verses all stage food, or special stage food. that can be considered better than the choices presented.

Since these are my choices this is how I would rate them:

1. Purina Dog Cho
2. Pedigree
3. Beneful

WOW, none of them. Try a higher quality dog food. Go to petfooddirect.com and click on the dog food section. Then click on the "wellness" tab and check out those foods. Most of them are higher quality.

Those are all awful brands, as are Iams and Eukanuba. Anything you can buy in a grocery store is garbage. Try something a lot better quality like Innova Evo. http://www.naturapet.com

Cooking for your dog with fresh real meat and veggies is the best food you can provide for your dog.
