Global Positioning Satellites

Overly simple, it works on triangulation. You have a receiver that gets signals from a minimum of three satellites and by comparing the time it takes for the signal to reach the receiver from all of the satellites, you are able to determine your exact location on the earth, including altitude.

With civilian settings the accuracy is about 3-5 meters, in the military mode it's about 1 meter.
