I am from Armenia. My second language was French. However, the most common second and third language people take in schools here are Russian and English (both required for many years).

I learned English as my first foreign language and this is common in Germany where I live. And then I had lessons in Latin as the 2nd, French as the 3rd and Russian as the 4th, but English is the only one I learned properly. You can also take Latin as first foreign language in Germany, and also French in some schools. However if you don't take English as the first foreign language, then you have to take it as the second.

I attended high school in Wisconsin USA in 1885-1989 and the only foreign language given to us was Spanish. I took 2 yrs of it.
My son is in 6th grade now and he has learned a little Spanish and German. I am teaching him at home the Greek and Hebrew alphabet. He is also trying to learn Chinese on his own. He says a few Chinese words when we eat at a Chinese restuarant.

I'm from the state of Texas, in the U.S.A. When I was in school many years ago, I had a choice of Spanish and French. I wanted to take German, but it wasn't offered.
My youngest (of two) daughter graduates from college today. When my daughters were in high school they had a choice of Spanish, French, German, and American Sign Language. The oldest studied Spanish, and the youngest chose Sign Langauge.

I live in the US. I took about 4 years of Spanish in middle school and high school, and since the Spanish classes fill up quickly at my university I started learning Italian. Next semester I will be in 2nd semester Italian and upper division/advanced Spanish.
