I am answering this from personal experience. Personally I do not like to be in control of anything or anyone, I am way too laid back. I think that alot of people thinks that they need to control eveyone and every situation because they feel a lack of control in their own lives. Another thing could be that they feel a need to help, and feel that the best way they can help is by controlling the situation, and some people are just plain bossy. To really understand why that particular person is a control freak, you would have to take a look at their personal life style and their other charachter traits.

People like that scared of feeling out of control. So the only way they ever really to feel in control is to be in control. It is like an illness. They feel the need to control EVERYTHING or they feel like they are in control of nothing

Because they are very insecure and fearful. Trying to control things gives them a false sense of security. It's sad- they get no joy out of living because their fears keep them from enjoying life.

They are usually filled with fear, because past events have been so OUT of their control, and done this to them.
If someone is trying to control you or your actions, don't buy into their illness, and don't victimize yourself.

Lack of self or inner control. Fear to burst out. Fear to look inside. Looking outside to avoid dealing with inner problems.
