20% hearing in one ear. I scream into the phone and he still can't hear sometimes.

Yes they do. Call your telephone company and they can fill you in. I believe it's called TTY. Dated a deaf man a few years back and he used one.

Its a gadget where its hook up to the house phone and who ever speaks from the other end . its change from sound to text words of what that person is saying and all he has to do is typing back his reply and then you hear a computer voice of what he's saying.

Go and check with any hearing doctor and talk to them the best things are out on the market to help with your friend.

i knew a guy in his 90's a while back, and he couldn't hear very well, either. He had something that was like closed captioning for his phone. i think what it did was use phonetics to try and figure out words and will write it out for the person. Sorry he died when i was like 8 and i can't remember much about his house, so i can't tell you what brand the thing was or how much it might have cost, or even if they still make it, but i would try google-ing something like that.

Most Radio shack sell an amplifier that you can put over the ear piece. This will make it loudenuff for your friend to hopefully hear you.

There are ways to amplify the telephone so your friend can hear better. You should be able to find it any store that caters to making handicapped peoples life easer.
