Most cats don't like the smell of pepper. Use a little bit of chille pepper and sprinkle on bottom of tree.
That works for plants also.

theres not much to do except use water! what i actually did was put it up without ornaments for a few days so he would get used to it, then after he got bored i put the ornaments on. When he does go near it or start playing i just use the water bottle, works sometimes. Cats are attracted to xmas trees because of the lights, the lights make a constant buzzing noise that only certain animals can hear, so this may make them want to play, or "attack" your tree. If they chew on the cords, use a bar of soap (dial, dove, etc) and rub it on the cords, if that doesnt work they make bitter chewing spray for animals. Good Luck!

When i was a kid my mom always made sure she bought the ornaments that are also a bell, its circular and anytime you barely touched the tree it would make the bell go off. Hang it near the bottom of the tree and maybe get more, they make them pretty now, I have two on mine. I don't have cats, but i have 3 dogs and they jump everytime they accidentally brush against the tree when the bell goes off.

This is a tough one. Everytime my cats go near our tree I yell at them and make a large banging sound. I have a cabinet next to the tree so i will bang something against it to scare them and they run away. So far they don't go around it as much as when I first put it up.

A fake christmas tree is the best answer. My cat lies under ours and stares at the lights.

I take a squirt bottle filled with water and every time they go
near the tree they get wet. They don't like that at all. Its really
hard to do that when your not home, you just hope like heck
you still have a tree standing. I know, i fight this every day the
tree is up. Good Luck!
