I looked this up at webmd.com and the website suggests you should weigh no more than 150 pounds. I'd suggest setting small goals and dropping about 5 pounds for each goal. It'll be less overwhelming and you'll improve your health at each step.
By the way, I keep from gaining by wearing a pedometer and tracking the # of steps I walk each day. Pedometers are cheap so you could try one, find out the average # of steps you walk each day, and then start increasing that number (say from 2000 steps a day to 4000 and then up to 6000 etc).
Grab a friend with a similar weight loss plan if you can. And good luck!

I was in exactly the same situation, but I had to lose 85 pounds to join the military. According to uncle same at 5'6" you should weigh no less that 135 and no more than 155. If this seems unrealistic to you, trust me, it's not. I did it. As soon as I started jogging, the weight came off fast! By dieting and jogging, i gave my metabolism a kick in the *** and it began to work much faster.

Roughly 100 lbs over.
Don't despair, you can do it. The Kimkins.com Success Stories have several girls who weighed more than you and lost fast (one girl lost 213 lb in 10 months!)
Find a diet that you like, get a support group to help you, start!

Jesus, you're huge! Get away from your computer right now and begin an exercise program. Start out with a brisk, 20-minute walk per day, and cut your calorie intake by 25%. DO that for a month and then notch up your walk to 45 minutes a day. YOu will see results very soon. Get a clearance from your doc before you begin walking.

You are morbidly obese.
You need to lose weight so that you don't die at an early age and suffer a lot of health problems on the way to that death.
Diet of about 1600-1800 calories a day will help, along with walking a lot in the day, and healthful eating\
Lots of water!

Be sure to talk to a doctor about exercise plans; you can do permanent damage to your joints and bones. Consider the stress your body is under, carrying around weight it's not meant to; then, imagine what your body will feel like, when suddenly being forced to do a bunch of things it's not used to doing.

you should weight around 130. start cutting back on your calerie intake, like cut 500 caleries out a day, also drink lots of water and try to get your heart rate up for 30 minutes 3 times a day (even if its just dancing around your room), and you will start seeing some improvment.

your ideal body weight is about 130 lbs. this means you are more than 100lbs overweight. That puts you in the range of "morbid obesity".
