I am having a disagreement concerning this matter and need your worthy opinion.Do people always know when they are having a heart attack , are there symptoms or does it always creap up silently? Is pain in the left shoulder blade and heaviness in the left arm more a symptom of heart attack or cancer?I know it can be anything but please decide and help me to settle this matter.

No, there are not always symptoms of heart attacks. Some people have multiple minor attacks without any knowledge of it happening.

On the other hand, what might feel like a heart attack, might not be a heart attack at all.

Pain in the left side and heaviness could be a symptom but it doesnt necessiarly have to be on the left side. Numbness of your legs or arms are also possible indicators of either heart attacks and strokes.

Have you had your cholesterol checked lately? What about your blood pressure? Get yourself a good blood pressure cuff and keep a record. Also, be aware of the foods your eating. There are some really good books that are meant for a healthy cardiac system.

There are a few different tests that can be done to confirm if you have experienced a heart attack. Ask your doctor.

Yes there are silent heart attacks. If I didn't already know of several people that have had heart attacks and had none of the symptoms, just woke up one day in the hospital not knowing what had happened, I may not believe that. However in most cases I think the majority of people do have symptoms and just don't recognize them for what they are. Or in so many cases, they just keep ignoring the signs because they are either too busy to deal with every ache and pain they get or they would rather not have to go to the doctor no matter what the reason. The few people who are smart enought or lucky enough know their risk factor ahead of time, recognize the symptoms when they happen and don't waste any time when it happens.

There are people that have heart attacks and not known. The classic signs are chest pressure (like an elephant on your chest), and pain radiating to the left arm. However, women and elderly people present with different symptoms (pain on right should blade, just not feeling well). The only definitive diagnosis is made in the hospital.

I am a CPR instructor for the American Heart Association and teach this to people every day...current statistics prove that 28% of American males over the age of 50 that go in for a check up discover through diagnosis they have suffered previous heart damage without symptoms.

Yes, it is true that pain in the left arm, shoulder blade and heaviness in the chest is one of the MANY symptoms of a heart attack. Pain does not have to be localized to the left side, contrary to popular belief.

I'd like to suggest that you go to the American Heart Association website to further educate yourself and others on warnings signs... www.americanheart.org

Actually it is very possible to not have symptoms or serious symptoms that determine a heart attack. Though you should talk to a doctor asap if you are concerned of this.

There are and they are referred to as silent MI's (Myocardial infarctions)

That symptom can be either cardiac or cancer or something else but if it were sudden onset I would let a doctor make that call.

All hospitals have some kind of "ASK A NURSE" service. Call an ER and ask that question. NOW if you have that symptom you described.
